The Dishwasher
I have said elsewhere that I would post the entire story here, so I guess it is about time I did so...
The story starts back in mid-April, when the pump on our 18-yr old Whirlpool dishwasher stopped working.
The entire machine had multiple problems -- like the cutlery basket was held together with tie-wrap, the door springs had long since broken, which meant that the door was difficult to close, and tended to drop suddenly if one wasn't careful.
It still cleaned dishes though, so we just carried on.
A pump, however is pretty much a necessity.
Chapter 1
We began canvassing friend and relatives for recommendation on brands and features to look for.
We assembled a list of things we wanted:
cutlery tray (not basket)
quiet
stainless steel throughout
We had a price range, and had found a Bosch model that fit our criteria.
On May 10, after dropping a friend off in Vancouver, we visited a major appliance retailer near her place.
They had one of the models we had selected, at a very good price, matching the best price we had seen so far for that model.
We bought it, and paid for delivery and installation.
Chapter 2
It was installed May 12.
I ran its first load of dishes through on that very evening.
It was nice and quiet
It did a great job of the dishes.
On May 13 I loaded it again.
When I pressed the On/Off button (which strangely says "On/Off" rather than the standard symbol
) nothing happened.
I called the store, and suggested that it may be an installation problem.
OK, good suggestion, we'll send the installers back to make sure it is all OK.
May 20
Installers finally make it back, they go over all the wiring, and ensure that voltage is present at the dishwasher.
Still doesn't work.
Called the store back to report.
Obtain agreement that if the machine proves defective it will be replaced.
The engage the manufacturer, who send out a technician.
May 25
The technician verifies that voltage reaches all circuit boards.
Machine still does not work.
Call to report.
Store requests authorization to replace.
Manufacturer says, no, we'll repair it (it is their prerogative)
May 30
Technician arrives and replaces the part deemed to be defective.
Still doesn't work.
Call store back.
I suggest that there is something wrong with the unit itself that is taking out these parts.
The manufacturer agrees.
The problem is that this machine is discontinued -- the reason for the low price I guess.
I can have the next higher up model for half the difference in price.
OK, I can do that.
June 18
Over a month after the purchase date, installers show up with the new machine.
It doesn't work
After a bunch of troubleshooting, they determine that a wire connector was defective.
It remains a mystery how this connector could have worked fine for nearly 20 years, then failed after one use by the new machine.
I conclude that the new machine somehow caused the connector to overheat. It does show scorch marks.
The new machine (now that it's working) is fantastic.
