Only a few hands on this player

On review, this turns out to be a pre-flop fold to 3Bet. Really?
What do you people say?

Pacific Poker - $0.05 NL FAST (6 max) - Holdem - 6 players
Hand converted by PokerTracker 4

BTN: $5.50
SB: $4.86
BB: $2.00
UTG: $8.74
MP: $4.29
Hero (CO): $5.54

SB posts SB $0.02, BB posts BB $0.05

Pre Flop: (pot: $0.07) Hero has K♥:9♥:

fold, fold, Hero raises to $0.15, BTN raises to $0.50, fold, fold, Hero calls $0.35 <<< as you can see, I did call though

Flop: ($1.07, 2 players) 8♠:9♦:9♠:
Hero checks, BTN bets $0.53, Hero raises to $1.59, BTN calls $1.06 <<<Is the check/raise the appropriate play here? I can't imagine donking would work, but check/calling has merit too

Turn: ($4.25, 2 players) A♥:
Hero ??? <<< clearly a bet of some size is required — but how big?

For preflop I recommend going to site like gtowizard and check what type of hands you want to call 3bet OOP on different positions. I'm not saying you should mimic it fully but it should give you idea how this hand should be played. In general its fold preflop. However if you are on flop then raise is ok, you can have variety of bluff raises there to pick from. On Turn you cant do anything other than shove. Your range is polarized and you have 3.5$ in stack, 4.25$ in middle. Using smaller sizing just doesnt make sense with very low stack to pot ratio and your polarized(at least in theory) range.

GTO Wizard says,

K9s is a 100% open on CO.

preflop, 4bet 30%, call 50%, fold 20% vs BTN 3bet.

Your flop play is correct, CR 93%, check/call 7%.

Turn is a check 53% and bet 47%.

Keep n mind that this hand is marginal defend even with nl500 rake(ranges you used). Check solutions for nl50, for nl5 I assume it would go maybe 20% into 4bet and rest fold.

Against a unknown I would fold against a 3bet, but as played I would check/call the flop with trips to keep villains range as wide as possible. If you raise it's a easy shove for value on the turn. You have less than a pot size bet left on the turn.

Cheers,

I should have a look at GTO Wizard. I tried calling only 7% but it wouldn't let me
With these GTO "solvers" how does one determine when to x/r and when to call?

Well at least I got that part right...

Open the spoiler if you dare...

Not sure solvers work well at the micro's, but based on the fact villain stacks of with KK in the end shoving turn is even more profitable.

I tend to agree.
If understand Game theory correctly — and I likely don't — the "Optimal" strategy assumes other players are using a similar strategy.
At the lower stakes, I'm pretty sure an exploitative strategy works at least as well if not better.

And what is wrong with his KK call? He unblocks all JT/QT/QJ . Maybe suits are not best but its not as terrible call as you think.

As for solvers - its not about mimicking GTO strategy but about gaining deeper understanding of game. When you know equlibrium and how to exploit most common leaks then you will earn way more than just waiting till fish spew into your nutted hand.

I don't expect hero will ever have a bluff range in spots like this and KK is only a bluff catcher. JT, QT and QJ aren't check/raising the flop or it's a combo draw with suited spades. Not sure hero is capable of doing this on a paired board.

Logic is simple - overpairs advantage allows BU to bet a lot, especially as board is paired so less sets in OOP range. However CO has more 9x and thus it allows him to check/raise aggressively. You shouldnt always call OESD/GS because it results in overfold against turn bet. And if you fold then villain is making nice profit on flop already. Solvers check/raising that type of structure around 20-25% times.

Obviously if our hero is never check/raising weak draws then calling KK is huge blunder.
