No real info on opponent.
I 3Bet because I didn't want to play OOP passively,

The flop sucks.

We start with 35% pot cbet. Without any diamond, we check give up unimproved.

I would just call pre-flop. Biggest problem with 3betting is that you most likely play a big pot out of position and AQs isn't playing to bad post-flop.

Now you could get in a tricky spot if you miss like now and villian called you Cbet.

I did — but just under 1/2 pot and he folded.

As I see this, hand play out, if I just flat pre, I end up OOP and without initiative, and I pretty much have to fold to a CBet on this flop — and a host of others

This is well played.
Definitely 3 betting this preflop.

30% pot on the flop, follow up any diamond. If you hit an ace / Q, I would probably x/c.

If he calls flop, you whiff turn, and it goes check check, the game plan should be to fire the river for 60-70%. Very standard situation.

Just call preflop, AQo is not strong postflop. UTG open range has lot of hand what he could call 3B - mainly big pairs or better A.
