Thanks. I suggest if you want to experience Ben Shepherd at his peak, listen to Down on the Upside. He composed a lot of the sings. Nonetheless, his weird bass fills are more apparent on that record. Watch him live as well. THe way he plays the instrument will give you a better indication. He wears it so low, plays it inside out, swings the thing and sways around on stage like a drunk. Its genius.

I'm personally a Badmotorfinger man myself, and I have to +1 on Shepard/Cameron being a very distinct part of the sound... one of the best in rock for sure! I think their whole sound depended on each member heavily... it would be hard to replace any one of them. I know Ben Sheperd came in as a replacement to the Japanese dude, but he cemented himself into the sound pretty well.
I saw them waaaaayyy back on the Louder Than Love tour in a club here in Vancouver Canada. Smoking show!
I'm glad they're reforming for sure... a new CD would be great too!
Of course it's a fact that The Melvins were clearly in my opinion the better band from Seattle... they also splintered off into many hybrids (post 1996), each more twisted and bizarre than the last!
yeah Matt Cameron is a great drummer, but I was referring more to his creative relationship with Kim Thayil - they put their heads together and basically created a new style of music.
