How many tables do you play at titan?
16 or less if there are no NL10 tables - sometimes I mix up NL10+NL4 to get more action
Update: Today I played 1st NL20 session, it's as usual - I told my friend who obsed me, "I'll play a bit safer now until I get comfortable playing at this limit" - and yeah, you think I didnt have half of my stack in the pot on two tables in no time?
so much about fear ![]()
so anyway, it could've been a +$80 in 30mins, ended up being +$17 session, mostly due to a 3way pot (4way on the flop), AJ+J, vs J3o+J, vs flush draw - the flush hit the river and I had to let go a nice juicy €40+ pot (I'm playing nl20 dollars and euros - yes, euro tables are not exactly in my brm but they're so fishy that I think my bankroll is sufficient to survive possible swings there)
As for nl20 tables - I'm playing 9-10 tables max for now. Will add more I guess later when I feel like I'm ready for it.
A small update - I'm currently comfortable with playing 16tables nl20 on titan, software is as usual causing minor problems but oh well. I've reached $750 or so tonight, won biggest pot so far (€58.something - gotta hate rake taking €3) and I'm currently "down" to $710 which is not so bad for 1-2hours of play.
I've got 9k titan points, I need to earn 1k more, hopefully I'll do it tonight and go celebrate new year with platinum rank awaiting me in 2010
Nice blog!
I'm impressed at your multi-tabling skills, I can't play more than 6 tables BSS without feeling that I don't know what's happening at each table. Although, I like it more to really try to figure out opponents and actually watch tables where I don't play also.
You're progressing well. I just wonder one thing about your BRM. If you play, let's say 10 tables, that means you sit down with ~33% of your BR. Now, if you tilt, wouldn't that cause a lot of trouble on your BR as you could lose pretty much before realising it and closing down tables?
Just a thing I thought about. Obviously everything works fine for you, I'm just saying you might want to get more conservative when moving up to limits where the money actually hurts to lose.
Keep up the good work and good luck at the tables!
Basically on lower limits you, or at least I, rarely met a player who actually thinks about what he does and what I do, so after I get everything cleared up - aka when to bet, fold, check, raise, etc. etc. - I just start doing it automatically as a reflex and then it's easy to multitable when you already have a pretty clear idea on what you want to do in every given situation
Naturally, there are always players who like to steal blinds from you or re-steal or do something weird which you can exploit and with practice you start memorizing every table roughly who did what and when and since I don't use stats, this history I remember+notes is basically everything I have to read someone's hand.
When I started I couldnt follow 9tables, and had no idea how the f** my friend could do it - but yeah, practice makes wonders, results come with time
-----
As for my bankroll - I use 30 BI rule, I feel comfortable playing so because it allows me to survive swings. Since the beginning, on NL2, I've always played with like 40% or more of my money at the tables and yes, I was aware of the fact that I could tilt my money away if I'm pissed off or something but I just dont do it.
-I've been playing StarCraft since 2005 and that game is pretty much brutal as it gets - in Poker you at least got luck on your side from time to time - in starcraft, you can play for 2years and get owned so hard you want to curl up and cry and have no idea what to do to even get close to winning.
So I guess surviving there makes it easier to survive in poker. And I also have real life stuff on my mind always which matters to me a lot more than this money I play for - so if I lose, it's like oh well....my world didn't collapse because I just lost $$.
Flaming the donkeys can help you deal with bad beats and also after a few months of seeing all the bad beats possible out there, you start accepting it as a part of the game and the key element here is I think your own skills - the more skilful you are, easier it is for you to deal with money lost due to bad luck since you know that you're better than that donkey and you'll win money in the long run.
Another thing that prevents me from going in berserker mode and losing half of my bankroll in a split second is proper mindset when you lose money - I am thinking of something specific here - aka when you lose money, you dont think, "omg I just lost $50, I need to get back up to $300"
-instead, you think, ok, I've got $250 now, let's build it up - so instead of retrieving lost money, you focus on increasing the money you currently have - yes it's pretty much the same in a way and might sound dumb but personally, there is a huge difference in these two ways of looking at the same situation.
I also check my cashier quite often, which might be a bad thing since I should focus on my game and not how much money I earned/lost - so cant say if this is another thing that helps me control how much money I lose or....I mean if I dont look at the cashier I might lose half of my BR without even noticing it - and the good thing about checking my cashier is that multiple times I thought to myself - omg I'm down like -20 now and then I see I'm down by only 4-5bucks because of some pots I won on other tables - and that feels great
The thing that hurts me the most is my stupid bluffs which can "sometimes" backfire and make me lose an entire stack - however, once I get into a certain limit and dont mind losing a stack here and there, it's all cool ![]()
Anyway that's pretty much it for now, hope I didnt miss something, if I did, I'll add it later or feel free to poke me and remind me about it
thank you for kind words, I wish you best of luck as well and see you around
Goal accomplished, I've got 10,016 titan points or so. My peak last night was $815 or so, since I pushed it and wanted to reach the 10k points, I lost like $85 in 5minutes towards the end of the night, managed to salvage some of it and called it a day with $749 in cashier - so all in all an okay night ![]()
See you folks and have fun celebrating New Year - make some good decisions for next year and stick to them!
hey, yeah, sry, i'm sick atm.
played one quick session yesterday - lost €30 due to titanpoker disconnecting me three times while I had 13 tables opened. a) Every time I lost the blinds I paid to play a round at the table, b) Every time I lost money I had put in some pot on the tables
It does kinda kill your motivation to lose money like that - I've sent a "nice" mail to their support and I'm still waiting for a brilliant answer they'll come up with.
Anyway, I might play some today, if I find the courage to face thousands of bugs, glitches, errors and other obstacles titanpoker has - if I can overcome such problems, I'll pretty much have a profitable session.
A brief update for the sake of updates - wasn't much action lately but anyway:
As I said earlier, titanpoker caused me a lot of problems which resulted in around €30 lost, just a rough guess. This was also the first thing that actually tilted me in a while and I felt my game changed - I also felt something else...
My bankroll dropped to $610. Since I'd dislike going back down to NL10, I played a one hour session and got up to $690. Basically I lost €20 stack once to bad luck, I semi-donked one €20 stack (stacks I lose to bluffing people I dont exactly count under donkaments, especially if they make donkey calls ♦)
and then I worked up like €35 and spiked a juicy pot where we got it all-in, both of us €20-25 stacks, which got me up to $670+, however I made some bad plays again and got down to $633, and then climbed up to where I currently am, $690.
- so yeah, lots of swings atm, mostly because I dont concentrate enough atm - which is one of the reasons why I dont play much, if at all, until this sickness is over - I havent caught a swine flu so I should be back on track next week I hope.
I was gonna modify my goal for January and instead of reaching $1,500 in overall, I'd go for earning that amount purely in January, but with these delays, I'll have to see how that will turn out
If I push the pedal to the metal, I might make it in the following weeks but we'll see ![]()
P.S. I look at my current BR as a victory, yes it is over $50 less than what I had, over $100 less than what I peaked at, but I dont have now $800, I had $610 and I got it up to this, so it's a positive thing - cant say, omg I'm still in minus, oh this sucks so hard - I mean I started at $300, I'm making profit in poker, why start whining now? :PPP Such attitude makes it easier to climb back up when you get beat down I guess.
Hiyo folks who happened to read through this blog or just bumped into it ![]()
So...I've been inactive for 3-4 weeks now, mostly due to being ill and not wanting to play if I can't do it properly. However, I'm getting ready for the upcoming month when I'll head back to the poker tables (more info on that will be thrown in this post somewhere down the line - just follow the block of text and you can't miss it)
An online poker buddy (more like a pokerstars nemesis who later signed a truce with me on msn) said he finds it hard to believe I didn't play poker for this long, considering the amount of time I had put into poker the last few months...well I just said to myself I won't play and I didn't, quite simple ![]()
So now that the month is nearly over, I've decided to announce the upcoming challenge and this time I'll actually do it (unless I get sick again :P).
1 Month, $1,500
- Poker room: Titan Poker
- Duration: From Feb 1st to Feb 28th
- Limit: NL20 ($ and €)
- Tables: 16
- Table type: Full ring
- Play per day: 5h
- Goal: $1,500
As the info suggests, I'll continue playing on Titan Poker, my bankroll there is atm around $700. I will start the "challenge of making a profit of $1,500" next month and the challenge will end at midnight on the last day of the month.
The limit I am currently at and will play during this challenge is NL20, however I also play € tables so it's technically NL28 or something, depending on the strength of dollar atm
I will move down a limit, to NL10, if I find no action on NL20, though I hope there will be no need for such drastic measures ![]()
I will usually play on 16 tables, there might be days when I do just 12 or something if there is not enough action or I feel tired for some reason. My table choice is non-existent, aka I take what I get - I don't care how many short stackers are around, how many this, that, the only thing I do care about is the number of players, which is preferably 8 or more (counting me).
I will play 5 hours per day on average, mostly because I want to have time for other stuff to do and because I think 5 hours is sorta optimal for me at the moment, so that I play focused enough on this challenge. There could be days when I won't have time to play at all, but we will see how things go once the challenge starts rolling ![]()
I will provide you with updates on my progress either daily or weekly, depending on how much time/will/energy I'll have to spare on writing updates here. I am not sure on this one, but I think I will count 1st deposit clearing bonus money towards this challenge, however, I will tell you in the end how much money I earned via playing and how much via the bonus.
- So besides testing how much I can earn on NL20, I will also test for anyone who might care how much points can you earn in 1 month and how much of the 1st deposit bonus can you clear. See you guys in a few days and best of luck at the poker tables to ya all ![]()
P.S. Vali just got 1 year older (which translates to 52-ish or so, no one knows for sure), so naturally he decided to do something crazy just to make himself feel young again - and there you go, he gave me this Moderator rank >,<
I'm not exactly sure what to do with it yet, he told me not to ban (too) many people and frankly, I got used to being on the other side of the law, amongst forum warriors, trolls, flamers, etc. - it just doesn't feel right being a cop now :/ send me back to my robber days
Hahah, Gz for becoming a Mod ♦
Wish you good luck in your challenge, ill be back to see how it goes
Congratz on mod!
Good luck with the challenge, don't get too focused on the monetary goal, just play good poker! I'll try to follow this one now when you'll start writing again.
Day 1: -$80
After 1 month of idling around, throwing darts and what not, I've finally played a session on Titan Poker. Five hours of straight play which looked promising in the beginning (+$60 in 40min) and then turned into a rollercoaster nightmare of swings between +$50 and -$50.
I was hoping for a +$100 opening day but it seems I'll have to fight my way towards that goal on Day 2 - in general I lost a few €40-50 pots with a set against queen high+backdoor flush draw which flushed my set away ![]()
These pots were kinda crucial to ending the day in minus, though on the other hand I noticed something strange in my play, a flaw so to say ![]()
-Basically I noticed beginners usually slowplay big hands and then donk bet if flush hits or something, because they're afraid of it - and I'm always like, wtf are you doing, it's too late to protect your hand now, if the guy has a flush - he'll call you.
I'm doing something similar, in situations where I have strong top pair or something and a card scares me on turn, like paired board and I fear he might have trips now - I donkbet to scare the guy away and end my misery - this is bad because a) I dont get paid off against weaker hands I still have beat, and b) If the guy made the trips, my panic bet sure wont save my a** ♦
It's more of a reflex action and I'll have to work more on such decisions post-flop. With 16tables up it's hard to improve your game quickly and change things, but we'll see how it goes.
Oh and yeah, I would like to send a big thank you to Titan software, today it only folded my AA,QQ,AQ,10-15 other hands - it is a bug when my hand gets timed out and I'm not even called to play it - and since the software is crappy I have to stack tables on top of one another (unlike tile table setup I use on pokerstars), so it's pretty much impossible for me to know that 3tables below the current one I have AA waiting for me >.<
The staff was kind enough earlier to tell me to play less tables until they resolve the issue but I'll take my chances and whack my nerves with folded rockets some more - if I played 2-4 tables or whatever they had in mind I think I'd fall asleep during the session ![]()
As my friend said today - how does Titan plan to be competitive compared to stars or ftp with such a brilliant software, my answer - bonuses. They're worth the pain, but I am quite certain that after I'm done with titan I will dodge all of ipoker platforms until they improve - ftp/stars/partypoker seem better choices in near future
---On a side note - I won't be able to post graph here of my progress because pt3 cant recognize € and $ so it's all weird looking when I import my hands and check out the graph.
Hopefully I'll have a better session tomorrow, this "challenge" seems so easy when you start winning, as if you could make it in a day, and then when you get hit by suited connector and suited queen gods...thing don't look so bright no more
Day 2: +$94 (overall +$14)
I decided to modify my approach to this challenge and instead of slamming my head against a 5-hours straight session, I split it into two 2.5h parts. It seems to me fit me the best at the moment, later I might do 2+2+1 hour sessions or something, will see how it goes - but I'll never play below 1 hour because that can't even count under a proper session ![]()
So anyway...to summarize my day: I earned $66 in the first session. After 2-3h break I played the second session. The second session began badly as my winnings for the day dropped to $46. It's my fault since I didnt end my chat(s) on msn and facebook before the session started.
Once the chit chatting was over, my profit rose up to $79 and that's when the trouble began ♦
Earlier during the day, I received a phone call from titan staff, informing me I have qualified for the titan iron man promotion since I earned 1.1k points on Feb 1st. The problem is I had no time Feb 2nd to play enough to earn 800+ points, so I was trying to create lots of big pots and accumulate more titan points.
Right before midnight I was down to just +$30 for the day and I'm still not sure if I made 800pts or not - will find out soon enough I guess :)))
So anyway, I wanted to end the day close to +$100 and felt like it was gonna happen (unlike yesterday when I decided leaving the tables would be the best idea). 35 more minutes of play and I ended the day with a $94 profit.
This puts me up by $14.31 in overall. I am expecting similar results in the following days but who knows...hopefully luck won't favour me nor my opponents too much ![]()
Speaking of luck, today I've lost a fair share of unlucky pots and sucked out big time with 44 against AA. I forgot pre-flop action but basically the flop was 232 or something similar, the guy bet like 2/5 of the pot, something weird like that, so I decided to call and see what he does on the turn. The turn came a 5 and he shoved for €15. Due to our play before and how the hand was played, I felt he was either on AK, AQ, AJ or something big like KK.
I still had outs for an oesd in case he had KK or something so I called - unfortunately he had AA, luckily for me 6 came on the river and the rest is history - flaming all over the place, the guy was pretty mad about my call.
The problem is, such situations are so nasty, it's like a coin flip pre-flop or post-flop, when you run into such players who will act weird and they either have complete air or AA. Some days I run into AA, some days I bust bluffs, I don't mind losing a stack and I dont consider it that bad of a call since it's based on a "feeling" rather than pot odds or whatever the case is.
P.S. I haven't forgotten about my progress to nl10 and 20, when I find time I'll try to write down most important things I had to change in my play for these limits. As for this challenge, I'll write down a few things that work against players on these limits, little tricks or call 'em what you like
- it's basically stuff I learned on my own; though I still owe big gratitude to my poker teacher who showed me the first few basic moves in nl bss and general concept of that strategy.

I'd appreciate that.
Day 3: +33 (overall +47)
First of all, it was actually a day in red for me - I finished my session down by $6-$7. The reason I'm up is because I received $40 from my 1st deposit bonus.
I sincerely hope I am out of the iron man challenge because it's making me play crazier than usual - to earn enough points as I once again started playing later in the evening (does 22h count as evening, ok, it's early night ♦).
I was almost certain that I didnt earn 800+ points on Feb 2nd and thus was eliminated from the challenge, but apparently I was wrong - if I'm not out today then I'm doomed and stuck with chasing the iron man title ![]()
Anyway...due to the iron man challenge and the 1st deposit bonus, I play more loose than usual, as I want to play for big pots and generate more rake/points. If it weren't for these two "troublemakers", I'd probably play a bit safer.
In the first 30min of my session (today I played for 4h straight), I went down to -$105. In the next 5min it turned into -$50 and after I reached -$8, the rollercoaster began again. For the next two hours I was swinging between -$30 and -$75, with one more drop to -$100.
The day was about to end with me up $60 or so but losing AA vs 99 and QQ+Q top set vs A7 double gutshot is never nice - double gutshot aka he hit runner runner and I could just facepalm myself.
While I play relatively aggressive and often get into €20-50 pots, I don't feel bad about the choice of style because my bankroll can handle the swings such action usually creates.
Also I'm not concerned about -$100 swing since in the majority of the hands I was 70% fav to win or enough to expect to come on top as the winner. Once the cards stop cutting my profit down and start acting as they're supposed to, I expect a more steady rise - in other words, it doesnt matter how much you lose as long as you made the correct calls, the only thing you should worry about is your bankroll, because even if you make the right calls it still does not justify pushing your bankroll to the limits, if bad luck cuts you down too much - slow down or move to a lower limit.
P.S. I guess the 1st deposit bonus makes me play a bit loose sometimes, but the bonus it gives me is more than enough to justify my marginal calls - as I'm not here to clear the bonus with 100% profit at the tables, I'm fine with taking let's say half of the bonus, while the other half covers up my swings, as I want to withdraw some money asap.
-once I reach my goal, hopefully, I'll withdraw and leave $700 or so (I dont like $600 brm for nl20 because the action can get crazy, especially since I play "NL31", aka nl20 in €). So after this challenge and after withdrawal, I'm going up and trying my luck on NL50, but for now, focus should be on the challenge and not following plans ![]()
It's hard to say if this was a good day for me, as I generated like 900 points which is always nice, but I hope in the future I wont need 1st deposit bonus to save my a*** and end my day in profit
Day 4: -$121 (overall -$74)
Huh, "been there, done that" could be the shortest way to express what happened last night. I wasnt feeling well but decided to play anyway, after less than one hour I was down by -$230.
So I decided to take a break, my bankroll for nl20 was in danger and it was quite hard mentally to grind back up, fortunately, I made it back to +/-$0 for the day (aka +$47). I was persistent mostly because I believed I deserved to end the day in the plus - because that -$230 drop was mostly thanks to losing 6 huge pots.
So anyway, I played some more despite being quite tired from climbing back up from that nasty drop. I once again lost nice pots thanks to my oh so beloved lady luck, -$100 and I thought to myself - oh f** it, I'm not going to bed like this..
So...I made my way back up to -$0 for the day. Once again instead of winning one damn pot to end the day in plus, I lost and lost and ooops, -$100 again. Grinded back up and deja vu, -$121. Too tired to continue, I decided to wave the white flag.
I've spotted some flaws in my play and being tired didnt help either and I'm not going to list here pots I lost and how, it's all typical poker, I got used to it by now, I'm just sad I'm still not going up as I was hoping.
On a side note, on one table I had a stack of €135. So I guess that gives some sort of insight into how active the night was
See you later folks, I'll be back - 20+ days still left go to, plenty of time for me to reach my goal
keep it up..dont worry about the swings so much..if you play well the money will come..
also i have the same problem with scary turn cards, same reflex..push it to scare them and im not getting enough value from weak hands and also when i have bad day i find myself running in to these straight, flushes draws which usually end as a bloody disaster on the river..
Glad to see you back grinding now! I like this blog since you just play one limit higher than me and I get to see what's waiting for me...
I'd like to see some hand posting though ![]()
Have you ever thought of experimenting with less tables? Just like for one day maybe play 6-9 tables? After I read the article about Table Selection I realised how important it is to be able to actually sit at a certain table for a reason, and I started adding fishes to my buddy list and chase them around @ different tables... Just saying I would like to see you experiment just to see the outcome, maybe you'll like it more ♦
If you don't like this idea, just keep on grinding. I'm just trying to give you feedback from my perspective.
GL@ the tables
