I don't know what it has to do with the VPIP.
You get rake added to your account even if you are not in the hand. At laest that is what I know for most pokersites. Maybe Interpoker is different here.

So if "my rake" is not correlated to MPP's or VPIP then all I have to do is sit there and fold every hand (except for premium hands of course) and just hope that others play a monster pot and I can collect 1/9 (assuming a 9 man table)??

This is what I know from Pokerstars, Partypoker and Titanpoker. It could be different because Interpoker gives rakeback but I will inform myself and let you know.
