I expected him to call river with any pair - that's why I bet the river. Do you bet river for value?

It is always close decision. If you never expect players to bluffshove river, then you can barrel and hope they would call you down smt like 98, 88, TT
But if there are chance he would bluffshove river then betting river is quite difficult. It is hard you to flop flush on the flop and he may easily turn his medium pp into bluff, although likely 42/8 would not do that.
So although betting is fine, I´d c/c river to let him bluff his busted draws and that I don´t have to b/f river
