Wow.
Lots of ignorance in this thread. You can not label this "criminal activity" when you have 11 year olds participating in this mess if anything it is inequality which has created these riots. Which is ironic when the British PM had to come home from his $10, 000 a week tuscan villa.
Also you have what 50% unemployed in some of these areas? Most of you are middle class white kids who can not comprehend having your Iphone away from you for more then five minutes and then complain about rising tuition costs since you can no longer afford to party as hard.
As the economy gets worse so will crime rates especially in our "consumer" driven culture. GL england your going to need it.

What else would you call it? The rise of a disaffected youth? I think that's an incredible slap in the face for all the businesses which have had premises destroyed, things stolen and for the ordinary people who've had homes destroyed and been burgled and robbed.
The claim that it is inequality which are responsible for these riots is almost completely unfounded in my opinion.
For the record, I come from a very deprived neighbourhood in the North East of England where inequality is absolutely rife and unemployment high. And. Not a single riot or incident of public disturbance on any sort of scale.
How do you explain that?
I also don't own an iphone btw

With a large number of people being unemployed or "underemployed" well our consumerist culture has made it important what we have - not what we do. This creates stress on people who are having trouble fitting society's norms; and makes an abnormal group of people who are then labelled as trouble makers - and its been known in sociology that if you label someone a "bully" they will then fit the label you give them.
Therefore, you guys have a bunch of young kids who can not buy what they want; even though society says you are only worth as much as you can buy, college.. iphone.. etc. So these kids have no hope of becoming anything which is probably true that they wont ever become anything except the lucky few. They can't even fit societal norms and so they create a sub - society with anger against everything they are "suppose" to be.
You guys sound like you all are regurgitating what your news casters are saying though. "thuggery" Lol
What I would call this is: Expectations well having limitations causes anger - well anger causes violence and violence causes problems.
Marc, no iphone, wow you poor deprived soul, that just moved me to tears. Best get looting then!
satanic you are so missing the point.
what you say might well be true. Unemployement is rising, yes it is shit!
I have been made redundant from 3 jobs in 3 years ( I stress redundant, not sacked!)
That is no excuse for theft, burglary, muggings, killings, vandalism, shootings. This has destroyed lives and cannot be excused.
Because I got made redundant does this give me the right to come and steal your TV satanic?
why not peacefully protest instead of shooting at police and throwing bricks in kids faces.
People just want a scapegoat for some free stuff
Most of you are middle class white kids who can not comprehend having your Iphone away from you for more then five minutes
Maybe some of "these middle class white kids" (prejudice and slightly racist assumption btw) probably got off their arse to find a job and didnt turn their noses up at it because it is shit and minimum wage, in order to earn the money to buy one instead of the lowlife doleite scum who decide to steal one, cause damage and ruin lives ALL AT THE COST TO THE TAXPAYER....but then again it wont concern them because they've probably never paid taxes.

None of this, as well argued as it is, explains why:
a) there aren't constant riots, or
b) there were areas where there were no riots.
This view, and talk of a moral decline, is just good politics, and bad policy. [TONY BLAIR INSIDE]
Oh yes, that "shooting an innocent unarmed guy" scenario is pretty interesting and ridiculous... Anyone from the UK, correct me if I'm wrong but standard british police doesn't carry firearms, right?
So what, like SWAT (well, UK version of SWAT) went into his house and shot him without a reason? Come on, you can't be falling for that....
So how DID it happen?

It will be true that most riots started because the police shot an unarmed guy.
still waiting for the official inquiry here, but who says he was unarmed? He was in a taxi with a gun as far as I am aware and i cant blame the police for shooting someone who has a gun!
I dont care if he fired it or if he did not, in my eyes if you carry a gun in the uk you should expect what you get. Uk law has become too soft, most decent people over here are sick of all this human rights crap!!!!
the few thousand people who were involved in the rioting are nothing compared to the millions of ordinary people who are sick of this type of anti social crap!!
Its time the uk toughened up and stopped putting up with left wing human rights shit!!!
one of the inquiries going on at the moment in the uk is about a guy who went beserk with a gun(raoul moat) it will cost the tax payer millions of pounds and all they seem to be interested in is should the police have tazered him!!!
Im glad they shot him he was a menace to our country i dont care if the tazer hurt him or was inhumane, if you carry a gun in the uk you should expect to be hit hard!!
hate to bump this thread but just to add,
While it was happening, I was wondering about the use of water canons, tear gas etc, and just then on SKY news, an interview with some police chief (forgive me for not knowing who) who said something like
"We do not wish to use any form of violent control, such as water canons, tear gas, or rubber bullets. What we want to do is talk to the community and solve the problem that way"
What she was really saying is
"Our police forces are to scared (lazy) and under-trained to calm people down, that we have resulted in standing and watching them burn down shops and businesses so that we can later justify this by blaming it on the latest version of Grand theft auto"
<insert conspiracy theory here>
In Belgrade Serbia, I lived next door to the Partizan stadium, and for every match, there is more police than fans. Riot shields, dogs, horses, rubber bullets, you name it, they have it.
Public's protection has highest priority.
I've not read every post on here as theres a ton, but the tone all seems pretty similar. Lock 'em up and throw away the key. Or just flat out massacre them. A tad mental perhaps?
Should we condemn these riots? Absolutely. Should the morons who burnt down shops, above which there were peoples homes, face the full face of the law? Of course.
It's easy to go all fire and brimstone and grab the pitchforks, but what we also need to do is look at the root causes of the riots, and make sure we deal with the problems so this never happens again. And yes, that means being a bit liberal about it. We need to spend money on these deprived areas to ensure that they have every opportunity to make the most of their life. This violence is borne out of a society where the people at the bottom have little chance of moving away from poverty, and this helplessness leads to frustration and a sense of ostrasisation(sp?) that can foster a 'fcuk it' attitude.
Don't confuse this with condoning their actions, but without understanding the reasons why this happened, we'll see more of it.
As a side note some of the sentencing handed down to the rioters has been ridiculously over the top. Six months for stealing two bottles of water worth three quid? On a first offence? MPs who defrauded the tax payer for thousands got less. As for evicting the famlilies of rioters from their homes, yes it may be popular politically, but in what reality does it help society? Plunging the entire family into homelessness is only going to increase the chance they will move to crime. Absolutely no help whatsoever.
