Bad Handz - exposing my bad play to my self

NL Holdem $0.10(BB) Replayer
SB ($8.60)
BB ($4)
UTG ($11.29)
Hero ($18.77)
UTG+2 ($11.65)
MP1 ($3.70)
CO ($10.15)
BTN ($8.30)

Dealt to Hero T♦ K♠

fold, Hero raises to $0.30, UTG+2 calls $0.30, MP1 calls $0.30, fold, fold, fold, fold

FLOP ($1.05) J♣ 4♦ 5♣

Hero bets $0.60, UTG+2 calls $0.60, MP1 calls $0.60

TURN ($2.85) J♣ 4♦ 5♣ K♦

Hero bets $1.80, UTG+2 calls $1.80, MP1 raises to $2.80 (AI), Hero calls $1, UTG+2 calls $1

RIVER ($11.25) J♣ 4♦ 5♣ K♦ 4♣

Hero checks, UTG+2 bets $5, Hero calls $5

UTG+2 is uber fish , 83/2 in 46 hands, MP is a more decent player but still fishy, since he called my raise w/ MidStack, also 30/9 in 23 hands

I raised to isolate the fish to the left of me, the rest of the table was really passive, probs multitablers.
Flop: I shouldn't have cBet this board, it hits their range quite well.
Turn: I bet more for protection since I want to protect against FD, when MP shoves it's a clear call cause of the pot odds. I have reads that the UTG fish will call down with just about any pair so when he calls I'm still ahead
River: when UTG fish bets 5$ on that river I really fear he might have hit a flush, but I've seen him bet with weak hands too often so I make the call, with hope in my

==========================================================
Important observation: When I have (or what I perceive to be) a strong hand, like 2 pair, sets and higher (vs fish even Top Pair) I stop thinking about ranges, the possibility I can be beat, I don't think what kind of hands would call my bets, or more importantly, what hands would raise me! OMG I HAVE DA NUTZ LETZ GET THE MOENYEZ!!!11 This happens vs fish more often since I tend to think they are mindless retards :f_ugly:

Example: I had A♣9♣

FLOP ($0.95) T♣ Q♣ 3♦

Hero bets $0.40, CO raises to $1.40, Hero raises to $3.50, CO raises to $11, Hero calls $4.59 (AI)

This is the first time I push all-in on the flop with a flushdraw, certainly the last. I didn't even think what hand could he play like that!

==========================================================

NL Holdem $0.10(BB) Replayer
SB ($10)
BB ($8.45)
UTG ($6.40)
UTG+1 ($4.98)
UTG+2 ($18.58)
Hero ($9.78)
BTN ($4.13)

Dealt to Hero Q♠ A♥

UTG calls $0.10, fold, fold, Hero raises to $0.40, fold, fold, fold, UTG calls $0.30

FLOP ($0.95) 9♣ J♠ 7♣

UTG checks, Hero bets $0.50, UTG raises to $1, Hero calls $0.50

TURN ($2.95) 9♣ J♠ 7♣ Q♣

UTG bets $1, Hero calls $1

RIVER ($4.95) 9♣ J♠ 7♣ Q♣ 8♥

UTG bets $2, Hero calls $2

UTG shows K♥ K♣
(Pre 71%, Flop 85.9%, Turn 90.9%)

Starts out as the usual fish isolation. This is another biiig fish, playing 78/2 in 122 hands. The thing is he is usually passive but by now I guess he got used to the usual being isolated against me so who knows, maybe even trapped intentionally limping KK! Could the fish have brainz?

Biggest mistake in this hand was when I called flop raise. Calling down with top pair, even though a flush draw hit could be argued for.

==========================================================
NL Holdem $0.10(BB) Replayer
SB ($8.75)
BB ($14.35)
UTG ($10.47)
UTG+1 ($24.70)
Hero ($9.37)
CO ($3.42)
BTN ($4.12)

Dealt to Hero Q♠ A♠

fold, fold, Hero raises to $0.30, CO raises to $0.95, fold, fold, fold, Hero calls $0.65

FLOP ($2.05) 2♥ T♥ Q♦

Hero bets $1, CO raises to $2.47 (AI), Hero calls $1.47

The preflop call was so wrong, oh so wrong...
1. Out of position
2. Opponent seemed nit
3. Opponent had shortstack

Not much to say about postflop.

==========================================================

NL Holdem $0.10(BB) Replayer
SB ($8.95)
Hero ($10)
UTG ($4.14)
UTG+1 ($13.21)
CO ($10.81)
BTN ($5.31)

Dealt to Hero T♦ J♣

fold, fold, fold, BTN raises to $0.30, fold, Hero calls $0.20

FLOP ($0.65) J♦ A♥ T♠

Hero checks, BTN bets $0.40, Hero calls $0.40

TURN ($1.45) J♦ A♥ T♠ 5♥

Hero bets $0.50, BTN calls $0.50

RIVER ($2.45) J♦ A♥ T♠ 5♥ A♣

Hero checks, BTN bets $1.25, Hero calls $1.25

We're 6 handed, not much reads on opponent, his stack makes him look fishy. Decide to call his raise from the BU.
Flop: I call because I want to keep getting value from QJ, KJ, KT, QT, Jx, Tx, Ax.

Turn: I decide to put out a small bet there. 1. to induce a raise from a strong ace; 2. to get called by his weaker range. When he only calls this bet I am giving him a rather weak range, a T or a J.

River: The Ace kinda scares me so I check. He bets 1/2 pot. He could very well bet like this with a weaker range than mine to get me to fold since my hand doesn't look that strong: I called flop, small bet turn, check river.
I need 25% equity to call here. In my view, there are many hands that could play like this, depending on the aggressiveness of the player.

Board: J♦A♥T♠ 5♥ A♣
       Equity     Win     Tie
MP2    28.17%  28.17%   0.00% { JcTd }
MP3    71.83%  71.83%   0.00% { A2s+, KJs-KTs, QTs+, T9s, 98s, A2o+, KJo-KTo, QTo+, T9o, 98o }

Given the fact he seemed rather passive in the small sample this would be a close fold.

==========================================================

NL Holdem $0.10(BB) Replayer
Hero ($10.09)
BB ($9.70)
UTG ($8.47)
CO ($4)
BTN ($8.01)

Dealt to Hero Q♦ 7♣

fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to $0.30, BB calls $0.20

FLOP ($0.60) 2♥ 5♠ Q♥

Hero bets $0.28, BB calls $0.28

TURN ($1.16) 2♥ 5♠ Q♥ 4♣

Hero bets $0.70, BB calls $0.70

RIVER ($2.56) 2♥ 5♠ Q♥ 4♣ A♠

Hero bets $0.80, BB raises to $2, Hero folds

Turn bet was too big, I think I would mostly get called by better Q, combo draws, 45

River: also bet a bit too big here, should have been smaller. Against the raise I guess there is no choice but to fold.

==========================================================

NL Holdem $0.10(BB) Replayer
SB ($9.39)
BB ($10.44)
UTG ($10)
UTG+1 ($4)
UTG+2 ($11.25)
MP1 ($4.22)
CO ($10)
Hero ($10.59)

Dealt to Hero T♥ T♦

fold, fold, fold, fold, fold, Hero raises to $0.30, fold, BB calls $0.20

FLOP ($0.65) K♠ 9♥ J♣

BB checks, Hero checks

TURN ($0.65) K♠ 9♥ J♣ 6♦

BB checks, Hero bets $0.31, BB calls $0.31

RIVER ($1.27) K♠ 9♥ J♣ 6♦ 6♥

BB checks, Hero bets $0.30, BB raises to $1.10, Hero calls $0.80

River is NEVER a call there :f_mad:

That's about it for now, lessons learned. LESS tables, MORE FOCUSED, especially on ranges, LESS bad calls (especially against fish).

I'm back. Applied lessons learned from yesterday's project Mayhem and ran good. 2BI up.

How to lose at NLHE:
:spade: More tables than u can handle
:spade: close decisions call / fold ==> always call
:spade: try to win as many hands as possible
:spade: don't think about ranges, just hope for the best
:spade: don't pay too much attention to opponents' game / table dynamics
:spade: don't take notes, too much hassle

How to win:
 play only as many tables as you can
 take it easy and analyze every situation with a lucid mind
 watch interesting hands in the replayer and make notes
 stay focused and look for folds when it could get ugly

For me today I discovered the optimum is 3 tables, no sense in trying to lie to myself I can handle more. 3 tables and in the place of the 4th table the re-player to study hands and take notes. Take it easy and analyze every situation with a lucid mind. Was pretty focused, disciplined. Made quad Queens. The process of making notes and studying hands played put me in the mindset of playing by the book / clean poker.

Yesterday watched my Motivation Vid. I started the game very motivated. Too motivated! I wanted to win too badly --> freedom from outcome was low. Right from the start of the session started w/ 4 tables, ended w/ 6 tables :f_mad: .

Today I also watched a part of a PLO coaching here on PStrategy. Brilliant coach. Made me consider taking up PLO as well since it may be profitable. Thinking of taking up PLO as a side dish to NLHE to keep things interesting, maybe allocate 1 day / week.

Got to review todays hands first thing tomorrow. Still working towards NL25 shot Goal this month!

Proud today I chose to keep my word, focusing on poker and didn't waste time at all even though I could chill ; drink beer ; watch a football match. And the Universe rewarded me.
I got discipline baby and I use it alot!

Wow impressed you have only ever lost 2.5 BI..I have stacked off tonnes from tilt and bad beats before (and recently actually..!*) Thats my one fatal flaw and it is absolutely killer for my bankroll/potential career/enjoyment of poker.

I agree with you though, two tables, three if you're feeling really calm and focused, is the way forward.

After a session like that, just read the title of your blog several times.

OK -- feel a bit better?

Humans have a strange way of putting negative events in an historical perspective.
You compare everything that happens to the worst thing that ever happened to you. If this new tragedy is not the worst, we shrug it off, because we know we can handle it. If it is the worst, we react in a predictable way -- but we get over it, and now we have a new yardstick of "the worst thing that ever happened to me"

So congratulations on hitting a new low. Your next 1.5 BI loss session won't seem so bad.

@pilks lolled alot at the graph! thanks alot for the cBetting link!

@vorpal wow really interesting insight, thanks a lot.

I guess I was affected more than usual by that downswing, since I was focusing purely on poker all day --> more emotionally attached.

Quick update
Since I last posted, took a break from poker, had to go and take another Exam for my masters admission. Great news! Got accepted with a very nice grade. Thus, I won't need to pay for my school this semester! Decided to reward myself for a job well done, spending that money on a new laptop.

The break was very beneficial, realised it was not very good for me to dedicate myself exclusively to poker, that I should live a more balanced life, while still dedicating much time to my poker career. So came back, made a weekly schedule in which I included working out every day (before I wasn't working out very consistently), spending time reading/watching great people that inspire me, getting up early, self analysis, daily planning, stuff like this.

Since I came back played everyday at party, fighting to maintain silver status lol. 1 PartyPoint is fking hard to get, end up grinding NL2 12 tables for ~900 hands to get it.

Unfortunately, looks like I will not reach my NL25 goal this month. This was a short update, more coming soon.

Back to studying Crushing NL50 I guess. At Part 4, discussing hands, found a few hands I don't really agree with. They bet too much instead of betting to get thin value. Left them in the comments section.

I don't really know if I should keep watching this series, it is from ~2 years ago, when the games were much different I think, and people aren't calling stations anymore.

Again, I see the date of the release is a very important characteristic of any poker learning material.

Ok, found a more viable option to further study theoretical concepts.

Will follow the NL Advanced Learning Path. Excited about it actually, I really like the structure.

I feel like it's at the times when you have to choose between what has to be done and a cute fun little distraction that your life is being decided.

Damn so mad at me right now. I lost the love for the game I admit it. My discipline couldn't handle the transition from home to university where I live with 3 other friends, from 15" sucky laptop to 17" laptop that can play any game. Motivation went down drastically.

Here I am, tilty mind state, after a short session of playing 6max (yeah, wtf? I was like there are no FR tables so I shall destroy short handed). Played sloppier than a 6year old.

Now I'm thinking to myself.. Fuck, gotta get back on track. Gotta recap. Think.. gotta answer some questions to myself.

Do I want to play poker any more? Cause if the answer is yes, I'd better get on it and treat poker like a serious part time job. If not, just quit poker, cash out the 200euros and be done with it. Being in between is the option that sucks most.
Yes, I want to keep on playing. Why? Because when i'm at home I spend most of my time on the laptop doing silly stuff, might as well do something productive with it. Till the end of the year, I told myself I would be on my way to take care of myself financially. This is a main factor to that.

The situation in poker is a reflection of the situation in my life right now. Complete chaos, extremely unfocused. Had a daily/weekly plan before I came to uni, it went to plan hell as soon as I arrived here. So this is the first thing that has to be handled. Re-putting myself on track. Re-making a daily/weekly plan. Re-making poker a priority.

Can I make it in poker? I'm 100% sure I have the mental capacity to do this. All I need is focus and motivation.

Previously, I had poker, just as a task. Actually, looks like I need to treat it as a separate project, since it has several components. The Project that is Poker will be discussed and ran right here, don't think there could be a better place.

1st task: steal articles.

Cya Tomorrow

Back to bronze my friend...bad times. I've done similar; slipped down to silver, just wasn't happy with how little return I was getting for my time investment, which was every day straight after work until sleep hit me.

Realised my skill is fine, and improving a lot, but I was bluffing too much (ego battles with fish..lol), tilting too much away..basically realised my psychology needs to be trained and honed, as well as my poker skills.

So a little break to clean the palette, then a serious injection of discpline into my game. Gonna ban bluffs from my game completely to focus on playing my winning hands optimally, getting my reads down, and working on bet sizing.
Get them cornerstones down!

Good luck with your dilemma though dude. Personally I will do anything to be free of 9-5, even if it means I dislike poker by the end of it. But that's just my 2 pence
