Indeed, I wasn't sure if 888 was still doing that thing with the pile of money when you're heads-up in MTTs. It always looked a little ridiculous when that happened in something like a nanostakes 18-man SNG, which was still considered an MTT for that purpose.

The money only appears when it's head-up, but it adds a certain something to the experience.
888 is growing on me as a site to play on, which is odd, because like GGPoker it has gimmicks, which normally turn me off.
They were one of the first sites that had throwables for example. I'll throw a trophy if somebody wins a nice hand, but that's about it.
Well maybe I'll throw a cake for variety.
It is destroying my carefully-nurtured grumpy old man image!

They also have emojis in some cases -- for example if you type "nh" or "nice hand" in chat, it does a thumb-up emote in a chat bubble by your name.

In other news, I'm going to use my freeroll winnings (may they always continue) to enter the step tournaments.

The good thing about those "gimmicks" on 888 compared to the ones on GGpoker is that 1. they don't go overboard with them (there are no automatic quick links to emotes after mundane things like folding a hand etc.) 2. they are entirely optional, and you can turn them all off if you don't want them.

I still kinda have a soft spot for 888, because they were the first room I ever played at, and remained my only one for more than a year, so I learned to take poker seriously over there. However, I couldn't get into their new design, and more importantly, SNG traffic isn't very good anymore and the MTTs are dominated by rebuys and super long late regs, which really kills them for me.

One of the gimmicks I always enjoyed were those seasonal themed table and card designs. I definitely remember some for Halloween and Christmas, and there may have been a post-Christmas winter one too. I think they stopped with those while I was still playing there, though, long before the new design.

I don't think I ever saw themed designs on 888.
As for long late-reg periods, I think they OK as long as I can buy in with more than 1/2 average stack.
Beyond that it becomes too much of an uphill fight.

It's more of a time issue for me. I don't feel like grinding for many hours before even knowing how many places will be paid, especially not some weird Hold'em tournament, let alone a low paying one. I remember ranting about this on the forum in the past.

Yeah, I get that.
On Saturday, the tournament I won started at 12:00 local, and took around 4 hours to play.
Money bubble broke after around an hour, and typically when I cash one of these I'm gone in the level or two.
This was a wee bit of a problem, since it was my night to make supper, and so it was late.

In topic of this thread, I also had to recover bankroll from 888 when players from my country got disabled to play on the platform, I think it was back in 2015.

I took a bit of a hit today -- I opened a table of PLO8 only to find that I had mistakenly opened PLO -- and lost 8 bucks.
It is tough to make progress when you do stupid stuff like that!

I played some PLO8 Double-or-Nothings and won 1 out of 3.

Overall, I did OK today -- just not on this challenge...

 PLO8 2 -- down 3 BI

PLO8 2 is the toughest of the bunch, due to the fact that players will shove their high-only hand. If you fold, you lose your entire equity, if you call, both players lose to rake. At PLO 10 -- and sometimes at PLO 5 -- when heads-up players will check it down when it becomes obvious that they have only half the pot.

It gets fun though at PLO8 2 when villain pots the river bluffing at a massive high hand, but has nothing. SCOOP!

Correct -- except for the "only"
That hand would beat me, since it would have sixes full of Aces, and also have a low.
The final board was 4♠:3♠:6♣:6♦:A♥:
Any hand holding also has a 5,4,3,2,A low and we would split the low pot in this game a 5-high straight is a "wheel" and counts as both a straight for the high hand, and is the nut low. Flushes don't matter for the low, but a suited wheel is a "steel wheel" and of course counts a straight flush.
A hand holding AA has aces full and would take the high pot in this hand as well
A hand holding would leave me with 1/4 of the pot -- take the high, and half the low

So in reality, I held the 3rd nut high hand, and the nut low hand.
The real story here is that villain pots the river with a non-nut low and a straight on a paired board.

I cashed a freeroll, a 3x $0.10 Blast and (at least I) didn't lose any money playing PLO8 cash.

Tough game when you get heads-up since the players will bet pot holding only half -- whether the high half or the low half, they don't care.
The problem with that is that both players lose to rake. Sigh

In reality, none of the 3 hands I was up against should have been played at all.
Notice how UTG+1 folds the flop. This guy knows his stuff, and if he raises, you had better either have the nuts, or be drawing to both the nut high and nut low. I was glad to see him exit

BR is now back above $400, which is really nice.

888 was unreliable today, so no cash games running -- managed a couple of freeroll cashes, but that's it.
After about 13:00 local (20:00 UTC) I couldn't keep 888 alive long enough to play.

It appeared to come back, so I burned my last Superstorm freeroll ticket, but just after it started, they suspended operations for the day.
I thought that maybe the problem was on my end, since a few months ago, an ISP in Canada had an incorrect entry in their DNS tables for 888, so we couldn't connect at all.

'twas all over the world though, so clearly on their end...

I played some PLO8 cash while playing a bunch of PLO8 tournaments on other sites, and finished up a half buck or so.
Most importantly for my mindset, I've been up every day from Sep 07 onwards.
