Chicken wings seem like a difficult dish to make a good vegan version of, and from that photo, I'd say they look more like a chicken wings shaped vegan version of regular chicken nuggets. Looks good, though, I would eat it. :f_grin:

As I said before, I'm pretty happy with my vegan fake crispy chicken that I've been using a lot, so I was trying a different substitute from that brand, the only other one they had in the store - vegan fish sticks (or fish fingers, as some like to call them).

They smelled more like fish food rather than fish sticks out of the box, and they didn't have quite the consistency of the real thing, they felt a bit more spongy. They also tasted only vaguely like fish, but they were still quite good overall, though not as good as the fake crispy chicken.

I served them a couple of weeks ago with fries and some mayonnaise, didn't get around to posting about it yet.

And because I bought another pack of them and didn't realize that they expired last week, I made them again tonight to get rid of mussgoes, this time served with hot chili baked beans.

I will admit I have a hard time with fake food.
(OK Boomer)

If something claims to mimic the taste of chicken wings, I'll go with the original.
I've no clue what goes into those products, and no clue about how they're made, so I just avoid them. And I'm a certified Banhauser who'll eat nearly anything.

There was a company that made a "Beyond Meat" patty for various hamburger chains.
One such chain had long made a big deal about how pure their food was -- no hormones, no steroids etc.[1] yet sold the Beyond Meat burgers without a trace of irony.

[1] Not legal in Canada anyway, AFAIK

They all come with their ingredients list as usual, and there have been some which contain certain fruit stuff I'd prefer to avoid, so it was back into the shelf with them.

Those fake meats I've tried were mostly hit-and-miss. Not all of them get the consistency right, and while they all at least vaguely taste like what they're trying to imitate while you are eating them, many of them have a weird aftertaste and give me a tough time in the bathroom later. The Viv Era fake crispy chicken is the best one yet, I prefer it over some version of real chicken from the stores (which is also hit-and-miss), the fake fish sticks are okay, but don't rival the real deal by a long shot. Both of them avoid the problem with the aftertaste etc, though.

For my quasi-forced vegetarian Tuesdays (I force myself to do them, so I guess it's something like "voluntary obligation"), I at least find those products quite convenient, because I can just make my usual stuff and substitute the fake meat for the real thing. Especially because I don't know that many good standard vegetarian dishes. :f_biggrin:

When I lived by myself, I would eat just one thing in a meal.
Like some days I would eat just salad, some days just carrots, some days just roast beef.
Not always of course, but if you don't do things that way, you would end up with day after day eating leftovers of the same thing.

These days, it is more difficult, since there are different opinions about what to eat, but especially when it is hot it is easy to convince everyone that "today is a salad day".

I'm not organized enough to schedule this, but on those days when Mrs Vorpal is working, I pretty much choose.
Yesterday started out as a salad day, but her shift was cancelled due to the heat, so we ended up having chicken too.

So now there is leftover salad...
<sigh>

I don't mind leftovers at all, it means you won't have to make a decision about what to cook anymore. :f_grin: And it almost feels like a free meal.

If you end up having to eat the same thing for days, however, it's not so great...

When I was in my early 30s, Mrs Vorpal went to college, and commuted to a nearby (125 km) town each day.
To get there, she had to cross the highest pass in Canada, so on snowy days she'd stay overnight with friends there.

On those days, I was Mr Mum, and did all the cooking etc.
I do a pretty good job of stew, and we had a bunch of root vegetables, a bunch of stewing beef so I got it going.
It didn't look like enough food for the 4 of us, so I looked around for something to add, and found a bag of pot barley we had been given by a friend.

I added about a cup.
About a half hour later my stew pot was full.
I split it into two.

About a half hour later I split it again.

We were dead poor at the time, so no way I was throwing out food, and my poor children ate this stuff for the next several years. OK only a few days -- it just seemed like years.

I tried to vary it by adding stuff to it -- things like raisins, popcorn and so on.

The kids still talk about it at family gatherings.

I feel proud that I made a meal (or 4) that is still remarked on 40 years later...

And this is where Banhauser originates!

The town (Lytton, BC) that set the all-time high temperature record for Canada on Tuesday (49.6 C) is facing a forest fire that threatens to engulf the town.

It is hard not to care, so I'm not going to try.
The town sits at the confluence of the Thompson and Fraser Rivers, and when travelling home from the Interior of BC (that part of BC that isn't "the Coast" or "the Island") we would often make a supper stop there.
From Lytton onwards is the fabulously scenic Fraser Canyon.

Not far from Lytton is the location where both the CP and CN railways cross the Fraser Canyon.
It looks like this:

The temperature has finally moderated.

The perception of temperature is a strange thing.
On the first day that it hit 26C inside our house we both felt uncomfortable.

Yesterday that same temperature felt cool

Modern humanity began in an ice age.
We've adapted so far.

We'll adapt again.
We may not like it, but we'll adapt.

Along the way, several species will disappear, some will be altered.

I hope that modern humanity will recognize that we are all humans, and share the same planet.
I don't expect that this will happen in my lifetime.

I got my second dose of pfizer vaccine yesterday.
I'm not expecting to be accepted by the space aliens though. Apparently I have too many teeth.

I was also expecting an app for my phone that would connect to the implanted chip, but apparently I'm supposed to know where I am without such help.
