UTG raised preflop so I would read him on a pocketpair than on a made flush or straight. Maybe he has a set but this is not very likely because he has to be very loose to raise them in the early position. (Maybe 88.)

So better 3-bet the flop directly to protect your hand and to keep the initiative so that he can't take a freecard on the turn.

The turn is a really ugly card but nevertheless I call him down with my previous read.

The 3rd bet on one street.

For example if you bet and your opponent raises then you can raise (reraise) him again which is called a 3-bet. If you look at your hand then you can see a 3-bet preflop too. (Preflop the first raise is not a bet because the blinds already are forced to post the "bet". I hope this isn't to confusing.)

Please don't hesitate to ask if something is unclear. I'm not sure what is written in the beginner articles so it may happen that I use advaced nouns which are normal for me but not for you.

The 3-bet won't prevent him directly from taking the freecard. But your normal play if you just call is that you check/call the turn as well. The point in 3-betting here is to keep the initiative. That is you 3-bet the flop and then you bet the turn. You can as well call the flop only and then bet the turn (this is called a donkbet) but if you do this you see yourself in some sort still ahead. But if you see yourself ahead then you better 3-bet the flop to get more money from him.
Additionally if he has a then you charge him for more money if he wants to see a turncard.

I hope this isn't too complicated. My main point is that you are often ahead so you want to maximise your winnings. You do this by 3-betting the flop and betting the turn.
