Should I have raised pre-flop here as it was an unopened pot or does limping in make more sense? Also should I have called the SB's raise as there were two people in the hand and I could expect a large payoff if I hit the set?

I think you played it fine. If you call you are putting in almost 1/10th of your stack out of position vs 2 opponents, so you are nearly always looking for a set. The rule I was always taught when playing small pocket pairs was the "call 20" rule, which dictates that you have to be able to win 20x the amount of chips you are calling for preflop. This is because you're only going to flop a set 11% of the time, and it is not a guaranteed win. In this spot you are calling 140 to win a maximum of 2940, which is within the call 20 rule as you can win 21x what you call, but this involves stacking off two opponents which is very unlikely. If you could win 2940 vs one opponent then you should be more inclined to call.

Wohmfg said it all. bet/fold preflop makes sense to me, early on youre only gonna get reraised with hands youre beaten or hands youre at +/- 50/50. Good fold

Hi all,

I would fold also to the big raise. But I would raise first in myself. 88 is good enough from our position.
