Flop: I am betting small here and do not mind a call, or if comes to that, a raise. Just compute pot odds and implied odds in case of a raise and remember you aren't drawing to nuts. I don't like checking because we can rarely win a SD unimproved, and a big turn bet might be too big to call and draw. But I don't hate checking for variation. We don't have to make a stab at every missed c-bet. Even if there is "auto-profit", there's sometimes more profit in other plays.

vs a x/raise here I would expect villain to have A♠:X:spade: /8♠:9♠:/6♠:8♠:

Against such a range I am way behind. I can maybe check the turn and try to get to SD as cheaply as possible and as you say, remember that I not drawing to the nuts.

vs his check calling range I am a lot more comfortable and would proceed with caution as villain could x/c as the PFA'r with some TP's , overpairs straight draws and some weaker FD's.

I think villain will bet his FD on flop most of the time, so I do not expect him to have much when he checks.
Bet 1/2 vs the missed cbet is perfectly fine.
