Hi Lemon,
I have enjoyed your lessons so far and commend your way of teaching! I find things easier to learn when coach is always positive and upbeat. I just have a couple of questions.

If i understood it correctly we are to fold to 3-bets preflop with all hands that aren't red? Would this then make our fold to 3-bet too high and make ourselves a target?

We fold with all hands besides
- Red hands
- Pocket pairs that fulfill the Call20 rule

And yes, this does make our fold to 3bet high and we can indeed be a target if we play against a good player. The reasons why No Limit Beginner strategy recommends this approach are
1) As a beginner you will struggle with what to do when you call preflop without initiative.
2) People both don't 3bet enough at NL2 and NL5, and when they do they generally pay you off too much with weak hands.

As you move up there will be a necessity to defend more and more hands against 3bet, and in the toughest games you will need to get to around 45-50% fold to 3bet so people don't exploit you heavily. But even at NL25 you can get away with 65%-70 fold to 3bet and keep winrates around 6bb/100, people simply don't 3bet enough and don't pay enough attention to exploit you.

Also i heard you mention a few times that some of these tips and tricks, such as 100% cbet are very successful on 2nl and 5nl. At the moment im on 10nl, does this change slightly here? I seem to have more luck/success on the 5s with this than the 10s, do you think thats just variance or do you think that ,generally , people are a bit more observant to this on that limit?
I find myself being floated more often than not and lead into some interesting but marginal situations on the turn, where im not really sure if should go ahead and double barrel or check-raise etc or not. I think that some regs are getting used to me and exploiting my patterns. So im I am in two minds whether to go with my read and adapt to the play, or to just stick to the rules and give it up!

And yes, I think you should start to learn to check behind more
I may of understood some of this incorrectly so please correct me if im wrong!

Thanks for your time and see you next week. :)

Yes, no limit beginner strategy has 100% cbet, bet/fold strategy and it's good against people that
- call too wide preflop
- fold too much on flop with their wide range, and then are reluctant to fold on turn+river
- don't pay attention to what you are doing

Characteristics that are typical for the smallest limits - you don't have to double barrel, or check raise on turns, you simply bet and keep betting your strong hands and strong draws, bet flop and check fold your thrash hands including midpairs. It's not optimal, but it's a strategy that will yield the most success against most opponents at NL2/NL5 while keeping simplicity.

As you get better and are more familiar with complex situations, that cbet% will drop, as you
- Check fold boards with weak hands that hit opponents range strongly
- Stop cbetting mid strength hands pretty much completely as you'll start learning what to do against a bet
- Develop a multi-street range based gameplan where you try to protect all your lines, make use of range advantage, play with range disadvantage and aim not to be exploited and exploit your opponents.

I think at NL10 optimal cbet% vs the population should be around 60%-65% on average - people still will fold too much, but you should start to
- give up hands with no backdoor draws on boards good for your opponents, especially out of position
- Use bet flop check call turn line with a lot of medium strenght hands that can't get 3 streets (like TPNK, 2nd pair) vs people that float you. (to check fold river, most NL10 regs are way too passive there) etc.
- Start using delayed cbet in position + check back with showdown value hands etc.

And how do you learn how to do these things and how to adjust from the Beginner Strategy? Well you're in luck because on Monday the lesson will be Success through community activity where I will show you how you can get your hands evaluated by other community members, how to use articles and videos to work on your game and I'll give out actual learning process of professional players as well.

Yeah actually I guess that was the wrong call as I calculated it against his stack and not mine, so should have folded pre-flop after being raised I suppose (only 18.5 if I used effective stack). Still getting the hang of it.

Nickycakes - I'm a complete beginner with 6-max, but with the beginner strategy in mind, it seems to be like you played the hand correctly. Your bet sizing with the isolation and on flop and turn looks perfect. You cant be too scared that the villain hit a straight on the flop. I think even if you flatted the check raise on the turn you would probably end up getting it in on the river anyway and you protected the flush draw for the river also.
It was kind of strange of him to open limp utg with KQo anyway, A10s seems ok to isolate in position to me.
But like i say thats just my opinion, I may be completly wrong, im certainly no expert! So maybe another opinion on this would be good. Just my 2 cents!
Gl at the tables =)

Hello Nickycakes.
Jakkosh is correct, and thank you for your reply Jakkosh!
ATs is blue in the CO/MP chart, so you do indeed raise the limper, and you'd raise to 4bb+1 which means $.1 but 0.8 is fine
You hit a better hand than top pair, so you bet 2/3 pot on flop and turn, and re-raise 3.5x when raised
You played the hand perfectly according to the no limit beginner strategy postflop, so well done!

This is a typical spot where I always think ... wtf ... it happens on NL2 and NL5 a lot. I have not found a clear line for these spots now, but I thought a fold on the turn, even though a bit nitty might be ok:

Hand1: I'd 3bb pre, Beginner strategy tells you that and people don't 3bet enough, fold to flop cbets too much and then pay off in large pots too often at NL2. You're deep with 2 other players as well.
Flop's interesting as you should have a hand that is between a made hand and a monster really as he should have virtually no 3x in his range and only thing that beats you is 44 and one combo of 33 as KK AA will be expected to 3bet preflop. So definitely calling the flop, I'd personally call the turn too as it doesn't change much and fold to a large river bet

Hand2: beginner strategy tells you to raise the flop. And this is what I'd do - reason's simple, he plays 10/7 small 3bet over a smallish sample, this player type's preflop range is heavily weighted towards QQ+ and I don't think you get more than 1 street out of AK anyways. And at NL2 nobody will wold QQ when you raise I believe. You are deeper here and don't want a 6,7 falling off possibly even a club if he plays scared money. Against good players with reasonable 3bet range I would flat flop always, but this is a case where following the beginner strategy to the dot will get you the best result.

Hand3
you can raise the flop a bit bigger so you can then shove the turn, but well played!

Hello everyone! Don’t forget that the clock has changed, so today we are starting at 20:00 CET/GMT+1!

What’s in the store for today?
Lesson 3: Success through community activity
In this lesson you will learn about the importance of being active in our forum and seeking discussions with fellow poker players. Essentially, we'll be showing you around the vast and great community that is PokerStrategy.com.

Questions to be answered:
• Why should I discuss poker hands, especially my own?
• How can I post my hand in the Hand discussions for No Limit section of the forums and this thread?
• What do I have to take into account when posting and discussing a hand?
• Where and how do I improve my poker knowledge at PokerStrategy.com?
• How do I record my progress and motivate myself and other PokerStrategists? (Blogs and their advantages)
• What's on offer besides poker at PokerStrategy.com?

Why should I discuss hands in Hand discussions for No Limit??
Ambitious beginners should always perform a so-called session review after each grind or day at the online tables. In these reviews you'll analyse tricky situations and hands that you were unsure of in real time.
However, a beginner usually won't notice most of their own mistakes on first glance, which is why it's important to post and discuss your hands with other people. Our coaches and other PokerStrategists will help you find the optimal play in those tricky spots, and point out flaws in your game that you didn't notice yourself.
Nothing is more effective than reviewing your mistakes within a practical example.
Additionally, you can discuss hands in your own personal blog (more on that later on).

How can I post my hands in the forum?
For this, you will need a tool that saves and tracks your played hands.
The Pokerstrategy.com SideKick:
For beginners we recommend using our free PokerStrategy.com SideKick which can be found under "Poker Tools" in the main navigation bar of our website.

PokerStrategy.com SideKick download page
Make sure you head to theSidekick Download and Setup guide
The information within that guide is important as you'll be shown how to install and set up the SideKick, plus how to access your hands in order to post them in our forum. The PokerStrategy.com Sidekick has many features, the most important one for our intended purpose is the following:

Saving and converting hand histories: Save your played hands and convert them easily into the respective code to post them in our forum.

Choosing a hand within the SideKick:
We've learned how to install and set up the SideKick, now it's time to play some poker while keeping the application running in the background to track our hands. Once we've completed our session we should open the SideKick and have a look at the hands we'd like to discuss. A good approach is to sort the hand overview by amount lost, this will display hands in which we've lost the most money and makes it easier to search for mistakes. Of course, you can also focus on hands that you were unsure about and discuss them in our forum.

What should I take into account when discussing hands?

  • Posting the hand in the correct forum:
For micro stakes hands you should use the HAND DISCUSSION FOR NO LIMITsection. Or in this thread.
  • Choose clear thread titles for the No Limit hand discussion board:
The clearer the title of your thread, the more users will look at your hand and take part in the discussion.
  • Example of a sub-optimal title for a hand discussion thread:

The only thing you can really learn from that title is the limit the hand was played on. People who are used to the term "Pockets" may also guess that it's about a hand in which the active player had a hand within the category 22 to AA. But that's not enough.
  • Example of an optimal title for a hand discussion thread:

In this case, you can clearly see the played limit, hand and situation the discussion will revolve around. Other users will know right away what this thread will be about.
  • Don't include results in your hand discussion thread:
Even if other users might be curious, results shouldn't be included in hand discussion threads, not even in a spoiler! Posting results can lead other users to discuss a hand in a results-oriented manner, which should always be avoided when trying to assess whether a poker hand was played correctly or not.
  • Information that should be included in a hand discussion thread:
It's important to explain the thoughts you had regarding the hand that's up for discussion when you were actually playing it. Without your personal reflection, other players will struggle to elaborate on any possible mistakes you might have made. Their experience and knowledge will help you to prevent errors in the future, so don't be shy to provide information on:

    • Which hands you put your opponent on
    • The playing style of your opponent and whether you adapted your own play accordingly
    • Being overwhelmed by the situation and not really knowing what to do
    • If you'd have played the hand differently in hindsight

Sample of a hand discussion post:

Preflop: Hero is UTG2 with A♠, A♦
SB posts small blind (€0,02), BB posts big blind (€0,05), Hero raises for €0,20, UTG3 calls, 3 folds, CO calls, 3 folds

Flop: (€0,67 - 13.40 bb) K♣, 7♦, 3♣ (3 Players)
Hero bets €0,49, UTG3 calls, CO calls

Turn: (€2,14 - 42.80 bb) Q♠ (3 Players)
Hero bets €1,31, UTG3 calls, CO calls

River: (€6,07 - 121.40 bb) J♠ (3 Players)
Hero checks, CO bets €1, Hero calls

Pre-flop:
Since I'm first to act and sitting in UTG3 I decided to raise to 4 BB.

Flop:
I'm holding a made hand that I can bet for 2/3 of the pot on the flop against two opponents. I'm expecting to get a lot of calls from top pairs and weaker hands.

Turn:
The turn didn't really change a lot since I'm still beating any top pairs except for KQ and my opponents should have KJ/KT/K9 often enough.

River:
Since I'm still up against two opponents on the river the pot has become quite big and I'm not sure whether I should still be betting 2/3 of the pot with my made hand. This would mean going all-in for me but I'm not holding a monster.

On top of that, I'm now beat against a two-pair with KJ/JQ and two straights have hit as well.

Therefore, I decided to simply call the weird small bet of the opponent. Was this the right decision or should I have played differently?

I think raising here and just barreling is pretty standard if he wants action. The question is, if we can still shove the river as intended - I would think so, given the fact that villain has many weaker FDs in his range, or even some twopairs ... of course sets as well though ... but does a set call such a large size twice to see the river pair? Hmmmm....

Second hand: Big mistake, I think the turn is a give up already. This is burning money I think what I did there.

Third hand: Pretty tough spot. But I think the river should be a fold ... he is barreling the flop in potsize, which I can only call because of two overs and NFD I think - it is close already, maybe a fold is even better but ... yeah, really close I think. On the river I see him at least with a twopair, Aces, Kings (though I am blocking these) or a set that improved to a boat.

H1: Beginner strategy tells you to fold as this has been a UTG+1 raiser.
But as I explained to you guys, the big blind is the first position where you should be loosening up as you gain experience, and ATs should be a reasonable flat
The beginner strategy tells you to lead here, and I think that's a good option here out of position with a 94bb stack: Simply lead and keep betting.
As played you should be raising bigger on the flop, his calling range shouldn't change much and him being 91bb stack increases the likelihood of him being a recreational player significantly. and I would bet turn shove river myself, with bigger raise size on the flop, smaller bet size on the turn.

H2: Beginner strategy tells you to bet 2/3 on flop, turn and river and treat the hand as a monster as it's a re-raised pot.
But I think you're correct to assume that our hand is not a monster anymore here. First I'd bet roughly 14bb on the flop - you put the shortie all-in and MP can't really raise you light ever as you'll be almost never bluffing here. Turn's a close spot here, I assume KK AA re-raise preflop and you remove half of them with the A and K blocker. QQ beats you, AK you chop, flushes beat you, and he has no reason to bet midpairs or bluff as shortie called there. So it's very close against this sizing, but a fold wouldn't be terrible actually. I'm going to admit I'd check call this size to check fold river ingame myself when I autopilot though and don't think hard about the hand though.

H3: Beginner strategy tells you to 3bet preflop, and that's what I'd do - his statistics seem pretty loose for fullring. As played flop and turn will be calls I'd say 3way, and you're right to fold river. Beginner strategy tells you to fold made hands to >50% bet and when he opened in MP, flop was 3way and you remove most flush draws with the Kd+ Ad you're holding he should be inclined to bet river with I'd say this is a correct fold.

H4: I think this is fine, a large lead on the turn wouldn't be terrible

Thanks for reply, here we go again after a very tough session:

Hand1: I think I should maybe just raise the flop, it is a tough flop though. The reason for my shove was: It was seemingly a loose fish who was barreling in strange spots before against me:

They Apply as well, ranges re just tighter although I do think 6max is the better game variant as coaching are taylored towards it
H1 - I'd actually flat in FR vs UTG+1, as played it's close but I'd play it the same
H2 - I'd suggest you open 2.5bb at NL5, postflop is well played
H3 - I would not fold for sure, our hand is between a monster and made hand so I'm calling turn. River will be close, I'd say folding the preferred option, people just do not bluff thereand he's a nit
H4 - Eh this is close, honestly I don't have a clue only flush combos is KJdd here, maybe T9dd if people call that even preflop? flip a coin really a call should be okay
H5 - this is a fold on the river for sure on the other hand

See you tonight 19:00 At the Mental game with Jared Tendler guys!

yeah, I mixed in a bit FR, will try to bring in some SH next time. Yet FR is not sooooo much different, especially the postflop spots, just a bit tighter. And since nobody else posts there hands anyway .... :f_grin:
