That burger was "novelty food" for sure. :f_biggrin: But yeah, it wasn't too bad.

I should make some proper pancake stacks again soon, haven't done that in ages. Also some French toast.

My breakfast of choice will always be English muffins with egg patties, cheese and bacon, but these days, all I'll have in the morning is a double espresso. There's not a lot of time for breakfast and I'm home in time for lunch anyway.

Nevermind, actually Full English breakfast is the best as far as I'm concerned, but that is for special occasions.

Full Irish is better (not because I'm Irish) but because of the black and white pudding that's missing from the Full English!

Oh, then I guess that's what we have been making all along, because we usually include that one when we're making it at home. At least some blood sausage, I'm still not sure to what degree it is interchangeable with proper black and white pudding, but it is the closest thing to it to get around here either way.

That photo was from the last time we had it, which was actually followed by a little discussion about that in IDC.

Primrose has always considered this to be the ultimate banhauser breakfast. :f_biggrin: Not sure if you're familiar with this "trolling" term, which was coined in early 2020. If not, I explained the origin of it early on in this thread.

Not sure about it with a beef pattie though!

I've no idea what "streaky bacon" is, but what they call "Canadian bacon" in the USA we call "back bacon" to distinguish it from "side bacon" which is usually just called "bacon" and either makes a fantastic addition to a burger. Maple smoked bacon (alternatively maple sugar cured) covers that off as well. I'm suspicious of any form of pre-sliced "cheddar" because more often than not it is some form of processed cheese.

There are some Canadian cheeses that might go well on a Canuck burger — Oka would be my pick, but its flavour is a bit strong for some tastes.

I assumed "streaky bacon" would just be normal bacon strips. As opposed to diced bacon, for example.

Originally, I considered using ham for that burger because I figured that it should be closer to what Americans call "Canadian bacon", but I decided that bacon is just better. Because bacon. Also bacon.

In the past, I often tried to recreate burgers from fast food chains, and was usually a bit disappointed that the sliced cheddar from the stores was not enough like processed cheese, which is clearly what many of the big chains are using.

Streaky bacon is essentially what Americans call bacon (tiny strips with loads of fat/rind)

100% all these big chains are using processed cheese slices.

Yeah that's a big Irish! Minus the mushrooms and tomato! We'd also add a "hash brown" or diced fried potato (which I inherently disagree with btw) - potato should not be part of a breakfast - any breakfast!

Also missing is a pork sausage.... or 3!

There are some sausages hidden underneath the bacon in the picture. :f_grin: You can spot the ends of some of them if you look closely. We always include sausages in this breakfast.

The tomato is usually the part I could take or leave, but we tend to include it. I do like the addition of mushrooms, though.

I haven't yet had hash browns for breakfast, but I would really like to make some one day, I just didn't get around to it yet. I heard they should be a good fit for my go-to breakfast muffins.

hash browns are OK, but diced potatoes shouldn't be called by that name.
leftover boiled potatoes broken into tiny bits and fried are OK. Lacking leftover boiled spuds taking a fine grater to a raw potato will be OK for most.

Ah I see the sosig now - couldn't when on mobile!

Agree, tomatoes can fuck right off my breakfast plate (add lunch and dinner to that too!)

Only will eat mushrooms with a steak if they've been cooked in a sauce of some kind (like peppercream)

Yeah, HB are alright but no real flavour off them so they don't add anything to a Full Irish!

It's a badge to wear with pride. :f_grin: Seriously, though - Primrose needs a really good breakfast one day. :f_wink:

I'm going to make her one some time, I even plan to invest in a proper griddle this year. But tomorrow, we'll have sushi.

Tomatoes are one of those kinds of food that I don't like on its own, but I do like it in combination with some other things.

Probably mushrooms too. They were a surprisingly good addition to my Germany-inspired burgers last year. They were back for the England-inspired ones of course, since those were based on Full English. :f_grin:

Hash browns might make an appearance in that new series I've teased recently - which may start this weekend already, depending on how things are going in Primrose's kitchen.

Anyway, I think we're all set for our meeting tomorrow, I'll just get some technical stuff in order, do some dishes, and some minor cleaning that is still left to do.

I'm sure that there will shortly be an international organization dedicated to supporting the banhauser movement.

Live Challenge No. 15 - Tetris... With Your Feet

Another really enjoyable meetup, with just the right amount of alcohol this time, a nice big plate of takeout sushi and a funny story of what happened on the way, which I will leave to the grindette to tell. :f_ugly: And of course, also another Troll Challenge.

Winter is coming to an end, which was the season for indoor gaming, and Spring is approaching, when it will be time for sporty outside fun again. How about we combine the exercising with some gaming during this transitional phase? We are playing those older games on an emulator, so we can use any controller we like, including those ones:

In case you're not familiar, those are "dancing pads". You would step on them and operate the buttons by stepping on them with your feet.

We have a wide selection of games to choose from too, and I decided to keep it simple and classic with Tetris & Dr. Mario for the SNES. The controls are still very straightforward, you would move your pieces by stepping on the arrow keys and rotate them by stepping on the O and X buttons.

There have been some bloopers during the setting up phase and our "warm up round", which I guess I will also leave to the grindette to tell - she had quite a laugh that day. :f_biggrin:

My original plan was to do some of those warm up rounds and then play a round of Tetris, a round of Dr. Mario, and a "Mixed Game" at the end, which is a special mode where you have to clear Tetris and Dr. Mario fields in succession.

As it turned out, however, Primrose did not enjoy the two player mode of Tetris so much. The rules are based on the well-known Gameboy version, where clearing more than one line at once makes rows of blocks appear at the bottom of your opponent's field - with a well in there, which gives your opponent the ability to counter attack too. Prim didn't like that rule a lot, it put her under a lot of pressure.

We therefore decided to switch to Dr. Mario for the challenge, with the intention to play a "Mixed Game" later, and then come up with some tie-breaker if necessary.

Those were the handicap settings we agreed on, with me starting at Level 15 and Prim at Level 5, but both of us getting "Low" speed so our feet will have some time to move.

This game too gives you the opportunity to troll. By doing combo clearances, you get to drop random blocks (they're supposed to be pills) into your opponent's field... and once again, the grindette did not enjoy that aspect of the game, even though it's a normal part of it. I got an easy 3 for 3 win (both the Tetris and Dr. Mario version are played in a "best of 5" format).

Instead of moving on to the "Mixed Games", we decided to just replay it with normal controllers and a heftier handicap for me. This one was a lot closer, but I still managed to get the 3-2 victory - and with that, also the win in the challenge, even though we didn't play with the rules I originally had in mind.

Spoiler

One challenge remained: Can we beat Super Mario Land, the game from our Troll-drinking games - while playing with our feet only (one of us would control the arrow key movement, the other player deals with A and B for jumping and running and the like).

Well... I'm happy to report that we managed to beat one stage at least. :f_biggrin::f_ugly:

Solution:

Spoiler

1) The Kilburn High Road by Flogging Molly

I've seen both Flogging Molly and The Dropkick Murphys live, they are very good bands. My current alarm sound, however, is The Kilburn High Road by Flogging Molly, and to be honest, I don't remember the exact reasoning behind choosing it. I guess it was just the energetic opening.

What I do know is that I have been using this song as my alarm sound for about a year by now. This is quite long, I used to rotate my previous alarm sounds every few months. Maybe it's time for a change soon - possibly a Murphys song?

As for Young Ned of the Hill, that song also has a special meaning for me. Whenever I would do one of my big movie nights at home (haven't done it in ages), I would play some music on that same device first, to make sure that the volume is at a good level before going into the movie. I once ended on Young Ned of the Hill, for the sole reason of it being the last song in my last folder. Ever since then, it stuck, and it became a tradition for me to play this song at the start of a home cinema session.

Congratulations to Saffo! :f_thumbsup:
