I think BB-s coldcap range here is TT+, AK, but I dont really know...sometimes I see donks coldcaping such spots with small pairs or any trash also, but this time I didnt have this read. On the flop I primary planned to calldown, since JJ KK could have had a set, I didnt think I could have make him fold here an AQ or TT,QQ definitely not, so protection is not possible here, and even if I was ahead of these, I decided to wait for the turn card, I didnt want a big pot, due to the reversed implied odds. If it had been some blank I would have raised, but this 9 made a belly buster for TT and QQ and the river is very wet. Almost everything from his range had a set, or a straight, I would have beaten only (AK-s except the diamond suited combo), and spilt with AA . On the river I got 11,1:1, the pot was huge, but I thought he wouldnt have 3barreled a TPTK on such a wet board with 1,1 AF.

Whatcha think ?

I think that you get way more advanced than necessary in your reasoning. Quite possibly, you talked yourself into losing the pot.

Protection is a murky concept. [There is no official definition of it.] It anyway doesn't apply on this flop. I guess it is ok to wait for the turn to raise, it's a matter of taste, but ...

... not calling on the river is a disaster.

Hi!

As played you should definatelly call river and folding is indeed bad. You beat quite likely AK or split with AA and getting 1:11,5 you will see that way more than neccessery.

but... I think its not optimal to just calldown here. His range is indeed very strong but with that in mind you only loose to JJ,KK and beat TT,QQ,AK,possible AQs,KQs which can easily be there and something else is never excluded... so you should be willing to raise at some point(flop or turn) just because you are a favourite.

You are talking about protection but in this hand is not so much about protection more about value.

Protection:
-force oponents to make incorrect folds or calls! for given odds.Example is when you raise in multiway pots and then all players behind you have to pay 2bets.

Value:
- if oponents have correct odds or assume their equity is high enough to calldown that is no longer protection but value instead.Since you will be favourite(50%+) the bigger part of each bet will go to you. Examples are when you are valuebetting AA vs AK,AQ,QQ on this board. Another example would be when you raise Top pairs on flop and oponents call with FDs.You are not protecting since they are doing the correct calls but you are valuebetting them since they will not be hitting more than 50% of the time.

...but its true that value and protection are often going together but its nice to understand each of them so we can understand better the meaning of why we do stuff that we do.
