It's not about being smart, it's about prejudices (concerning the understanding of the skill aspect in poker).

being prejudiced and being dumb goes somewhat together

very important factor to take into consideration indeed

lol; I have nothing to add, as everything was said so far

I see only 2 options: In short run it's about leaving her or poker and you should know the answer by yourself.. In long run it's more complicated, dangerous etc, so you should think about that...

(I'd leave her not poker, but it's not because of poker...)

If you do end up in hell, you can play against the likes of Vickie Coren, Isabelle Mercier, Clonie Gowen... now if that is not an incentive for "sinning", I don't know what is. ;)

I'll buy you drink Drakhor

Fuck! Everything's over... well, Vickie Coren or Isabelle Mercier will be with me, so it's not so bad after all

I miight explain that you are actually doing the Lord's work by helping people lose their money, hit bottom and find God.

"Gambling .. is recognized as any activity in which wealth changes hands, mainly on the basis of chance and with risk to the gambler. Creative effort, useful skills, and responsible investment are not integral factors."

I don't think that Pokerstrategy can be called gambling. It is not mainly based on chance. Useful skills and responsible investment seem to be the main tenets of this site.

It's not gambling,if you use BRM and acquire winning skills. It's even less gambling than investing in the stock market is. Most of us understand variance, BRM and have - from what I see, much better performance the market.

If this were really gambling and not investment, the odds are that pokerstrategy.com would not exist for very long.

PS.com is not gambling, but poker in general IS GAMBLING! OK, it's skill game etc., but in short run it's gambling... everytime you get cards you're gambling because you don't know what will come on the board... it's gambling, but you can be better than gambler => you can win over the long period. It's about training, improving, working on yourself, but in general it's gambling - it doesn't have to be negative word ;)

btw: i gave this thread 10/10 and now it has only 5.5 points after 2 votes... how it's possible the only one who voted before me gave it 1/10? It's one of the best threads that have ever been made here... I understand it's not funny problem and can cause a lot of troubles, but some of these replies are just too good to be missed

OP's Girlfriend?

Why not just tell her that you're playing for play money and not real cash?
It's not gambling if there's no money on the table.
But lying is a sin so you're probably going to hell.
Seems a little outrageous to me that she would flip like that, I think you need to sit back and evaluate the relationship and what you want out of it.
Basically it comes down to how long you 2 have been dating and how serious you are about her.
Personally, poker is gonna make me a lot more money than a wife will

Worth a shot imo ... :O

You must know if it's good decision or not.

Believe me, 80%+ girls/women will accept your poker success (some $$$ should help somehow too) and 98%+ won't think about it as a sin ;)

Have you guys seen the movie <Meet the parents>.

Well, Imagine this guys meeting her parents, lol.

yeah gambling is a sin - its right up there with sex before marriage, banking, planting two different crops in the same field, wearing garments made of more than one material, selling property to a female and allowing homosexuals to live.

If your girlfriend really has a problem with disobeying the word of god, tell her to have a good hard think about where her values actually come from - it sure as hell isnt god.

Modern christian values are created by man, and often directly contradict the bible - to claim that modern ethics are the will of God when they are not is probably the biggest sin ever committed.

This.

But in all seriousness if she doesn't agree with your hobby/something you enjoy (goes for anything) and you've tried to make your case about how it's as much gambling as investing in stocks and how much you enjoy it (as long as it's not harmful to you) then she has to accept you and it as parts of you.

I know you'll make all sorts of rationalisations for not breaking up with her but seriously, it's EV+ time, money and emotional sanity to end it now.

Find someone who embraces who you are, don't settle for anything less (unless you're looking for something short term).

edit; didn't read that she said she can't be with you, awesome.

GL finding someone actually worth your time.

Ok I got to add!! even though you made your move....

When it comes to beccoming a partner with someone, both sides MUST accept the other one
for who they are or else sooner or later your gonna hit a brick wall. Better sooner IMO.

Giving up what makes you happy to make her happy will only make you unhappy.

And when your unhappy it is only a matter of time before you say F this.. It is not worth it.

She has a point that it starts out as a game, and for some, it can ruin their lives.
But when you explain it to her that you are not one of those sufferers, and you
show her that you are playing this game following advice and coaching, including the
strategy section which you should simply show her the awsome articles on phsychology.

If she can see first hand that these issues are not brushed off, and taken into account,
and show her the posts of people saying they have won $7000 but have a $15000 credit card
debt.
You see several people posting things like

"Please stop playing and get help for your sake and your family!!"

Ask her if she should advocate all liquor stores being slammed shut because of whinos?

Didnt Jesus turn a bunch of water into wine?

Anyhow simply put, The term gambling has to be applied to poker.

However, sites like this make it RESPONSIBLE gambling.

Hell what does good old Brunson say in his book?

Not to quote but what I took from it was, if you can not afford to lose every dollar infront
of you on that poker table, and still pay your rent and bills and whatnot then you have
got no right whatsoever to be there.

If she can not see or understand these things when you show them to her...

then that is because she does not want to.

And good riddance IMO.

though i understand that OP is going through some serious problems with this, i seriously hope he realized that girl's mindset is just not healthy.
no offence, but if she can't accept you for what you are, you shouldn't make compromises and just leave her imo. don't look back, it's for the best ;)

besides, look at all the wonderful replies here they all think her grandparents had black slaves, she hates homosexuals and doesn't know how to vote gotta love 'em all! :P

As someone living very near the border of the States I can promise you one thing.

Christians know how to vote.

ok, for me, it will never be a sin! cuz i think about it as a job..a way of getting money...but the Father(from catholic church) that i talked with ,had another way of looking at it...

it goes like this, "lets say u have the money, and your playing with it, because u don't need it..cuz if u needed it u will never play with it, unless ur sick ( gambling addiction) ..so instead of playin wiz ur money, u should give to pplz who really need it... ! "

as i said i don't really see it this way..cuz i will deposit some money that i really need, cuz i think i will double it...

and right now hell for me is when i lose my AA to 72 o lool

The religious love to wave their flags....

Ok so if your doing it with money you do not need, that means its a hobby untill your good
enough to make a living. If he thinks that way, he should give away his T.V. and never ever
eat out at a diner. He should give it all to the needy.

They have their eyes open, but they do not see much.

Oh wait you meant a priest! I thought you meant her father....

Haha the priest prolly doesnt have a T.V.

I think you get my point though.
