Preflop: Hero is BTN with 9 J
UTG folds, MP raises to $0.60, CO folds, Hero calls $0.60, SB calls $0.50, BB folds

Flop: ($2) 6 8 J (3 players)
SB bets $1.60, MP raises to $6.80, Hero???

Ok, this was played on a Speed Table and my hud was responding pretty slow at the time, so this was all played basically readless unfortunately. MP looks reggy while SB looks slightly recreational based on stack size. All pretty standard pre-flop, I might 3bet this hand sometimes vs certain opponents but I don't think flatting here is too bad.

A great flop, SB leads out and I'm preparing to raise/get it in vs him no problem. Then, MP raises pretty massive, obviously looking like he's committing himself, especially with me still to act. Obviously with 100bb's I'm auto-shoving (I know that effective stacks are 100bb's but I hope you understand where I'm coming from) but with a deeper stack that I should be protecting and still SB left behind me to act, what would be the best play here? Calling, raising, maybe even a tight fold? I was really uncertain here and I'm usually pretty prepared for situations in a hand but not this time. What's the best play here readless? Let me know what you think.

Thanks

Hey G,

Before we go into postflop, tell me why do you deem preflop standard? I see it as a very obvious fold without stats, maybe bluff 3bet, never a call. :)

Wassup Manu,

Some nice connectivity and can hit flops a lot of ways. A lot of hidden straight potential too. I love J9s, it's one of my favourite hands. I have position too. Almost definitely not optimal play but what can I say, everyone's got a favourite hand.... What about postflop?

Thanks

Well, make your favourite hand AA please

The preflop call will be -EV unless you know some leaks you can exploit. Calling just to hit won't be good at all unfortunately.

As you can see, even when hitting you have a tough spot. You don't hit much better than this yet when you face a raise you are in trouble. That said, it's still a close shove 100bb deep, probably close than you think just because MP can have a lot more overpairs that want to shut you out of the pot but you have thje equity against such a range.

If you were deeper, it ofc firstly depends how deep. If you are like 500bb deep, you can potentially bluff bottom set out of the pot since it's so far from the nuts. Prob best to look at some equities:

Board: J♦8♣6♣
       Equity     Win     Tie
MP2    67.59%  67.59%   0.00% { JJ, 88, 66 }
MP3    32.41%  32.41%   0.00% { Jc9c }

Board: J♦8♣6♣
       Equity     Win     Tie
MP2    55.05%  55.05%   0.00% { JJ+, 88, 66, QcTc }
MP3    44.95%  44.95%   0.00% { Jc9c }

Board: J♦8♣6♣
       Equity     Win     Tie
MP2    54.08%  54.08%   0.00% { JJ+, 88, 66, AcKc, AcQc, AcTc, QcTc }
MP3    45.92%  45.92%   0.00% { Jc9c }

So overall, we should not fold against a raise and we can think about trying to clear equity and 3bet then get it in, esp if more than sets get it in, or call to draw basically. Either will be +EV.

That said, I will stress again that preflop is a fold given unknown MP opener and will not create for a profitable situation in general to call.

Hi,

So we're looking to 3bet get it in here vs both opponents right? Or are we calling MP's raise and letting SB act? I guess you're saying it doesn't make much difference either way?

Thanks

You are just 100bb deep here but yeah, in general not a big difference with the hand itself, it depends a bit on what range you want to include it in: flatting or 3betting? If you almost never flat, then you prob should 3bet this as well and vice-versa. The hand's equity and playability is about the same both ways. :)

Interesting to see preflop play. I thouth regs almost never call such weak hands, unless they see some postgflop leaks of opoennt.

so in this hand

NL20 SH KQ top pair river call?

thats why I folded on river - did not assign weak preflop range to BTN :)

Yeah, I already said preflop should be a fold without knowing specific leaks of opponents.
