Primrose vs Harrier - Troll Challenges

It sometimes seems like Prim can't sit still for a few moments... that playful puppy has been on the tennis court for three days in a row now, and I heard she'll be back there tomorrow.

I think her body could use a break, and maybe her mind could too. So could I, after spending a good chunk of the afternoon working on poker spreadsheets. And with Primrose being in the process of coming up with a new way of looking at poker anyway, I think we can leave out tonight's HORSE race.

More challenges coming up hopefully next week, and maybe a new burger too. Until then, we have a new Troll Trivia question:

Primrose and Harrier are navigating tent mazes and tiptoeing around used syringes on the ground as they visit the once-beautiful state of California.

Surf's up, Trolls! Surf and turf, that is, because today's burger will feature some shrimps as a topping.

I also cut up an avocado.

Bringing it all together, we start with a slice of cheese and a beef patty...

Then we add the sliced avocado and also some diced tomatoes...

...and finally the shrimps. I don't usually bother with removing the shells.

Our California-inspired burger is ready.

For my second burger, I did remove the shrimp shells - they were a lot better that way as a topping.

Far out, dude! Not bad at all, at least. The second burger was a lot better, with he shrimp shells removed and a larger amount of avocados. I considered adding some mayo or another kind of sauce, but I think it would just have masked the flavors too much. Maybe this burger wasn't the best value with its relatively pricey ingredients, but it was quite passable.

Primrose, on the other hand, thought those burgers were a major bummer - and quite banhauser.

In my personal ranking, I think they have earned a solid spot in the middle of the pack.

Absolutely and totally Banhauser! I would say, this one is the biggest Banhauser-burger so far.

avocado on a burger is definitely tasty.
I don't like dicing tomatoes for burgers — they fall out too easily, so I think slices are better.
For cheese, I melt shredded cheddar on the burger in the pan. Way better than the sliced stuff.
I love prawns, shrimps or whatever you want to call 'em — but on the side please. My jaw can only open so wide

Actually, the only reason I used diced tomatoes this time was that I only had a few cherry tomatoes at home, which weren't easy to slice. They did fall out quite easily.

They seemed a lot easier to dice than any regular tomatoes, though. I should keep that in mind the next time I'm using some for burritos.

Melting cheese on the patty is a good idea in general, whether you use sliced or shredded cheese or it.

The HORSE Race! Yeah, sorry, we didn't even make a conscious decision to skip it this time - we simply forgot about it as I was preparing my slightly disappointing Caesar chicken salad.

It's all good, we're both slowly getting back to the tables, I'm sure this blog will be somewhat poker-related again soon enough.

Primrose counts all three of these choices among her childhood heroines, and she even mentioned to me that the story of Anne of Green Gables is what inspired her to go for a completely red hair color rather than her natural reddish-brown. Her costume choice for carnival, however, was Pippi Longstocking.

While wearing mismatched socks, sleeping with one's feet on the pillow and having a monkey butler at home all sounds more like something I would do, the story of the strongest girl in the world seems like a good fit for the "hyper aggressive" grindette we all know and love.

I must admit that my attitude towards this character may have been a little soured in recent months by that one colleague I had at my previous job, who apparently felt unable to work without loudly whistling her theme song across the entire hall. Then again, that poor guy was probably tone deaf, at least if his whistling skills - or lack thereof - were anything to go by.

Well, I could only consider it an honor.

Primrose and I already had an idea for a new series that might finally turn this thread into a complete cooking blog. Not sure if we'll get to it this week already. I do plan to present another burger variant, and I will already predict that it might be a hot contestant for Primrose's #1 banhauser spot.

Also, we have another live meetup planned for next Friday. It has been a while since our last one, and we have both been working hard recently - in fact, I worked some overtime today so I could make room for our meetup after work. I think we deserve another nice break.

We stay in North America, and after having previously visited Primrose's homeland as well as my own last year, it is only fitting that we make a trip up north to the home of another fellow Troll.

Don't worry, Prim, I won't use any poutine. Mostly because I don't know yet how to make cheese curds.
You better hope I never learn, or there might be an extra "Québec" version in the future...

For our burgers, we will use some brioche buns that I had left over.

We start simple enough, with a slice of cheddar and a mixed beef and pork meat patty.

Then, we will add a pancake. Yes.

Homemade pancakes would have been ideal, of course, but it's tough to adjust the ingredients to make such a small amount, and I didn't feel like making an entire stack of them. So I used a store-bought one instead, microwaved to pure perfection.

Now, am I really going to add maple syrup on top? Seriously? Maple syrup on a burger? Shouldn't even banhausers have standards? Is this really what this series has come to?

Then we add another patty and some bacon. The bacon got a little dark this time, even though it was prepared in the air fryer in the same way as usual. Weird, but it was still good.

Top it off, and our Canada-inspired burger is ready, eh?

Primrose could think of a few words to describe those burgers, but contrary to Canadian stereotypes, none of them would be polite...

She has informed me, though, that this is not her number 1 banhauser pick, that one still goes to last week's California version with its shrimps and avocado. Today's version is still a solid runner-up for her.

As for me, those burgers were all right. Despite some of the outlandish ingredients, the first one I made was surprisingly bland. The second one was a lot better, I made sure to spread the syrup more evenly on that one, and also added a little extra syrup on top of the bacon, which helped out a bit. The sweetness was not even that overwhelming. It was all good overall, though it didn't stand out too much for me.

I think I will put this one at #11 in my personal ranking.

Pancakes, maple syrup and streaky bacon are the fucking nuts of a combo - become a firm Sunday morning favourite in our house - despite being calorific I really enjoy it as part of my balance Sunday diet (usually have low calorie dinner like Lamb Stew)

Not sure about it with a beef pattie though!
