About Me:

Spoiler

I began playing Poker in mid 2009 on PokerStars with a $5 promotional bankroll. After several years at University studying Psychology, Neuroscience, and Statistics it seemed only natural to apply my student mentality to poker.

A $5 promotional bankroll, while fragile was enough to begin learning so I played .02/.04 Fixed-Limit, Full Ring on PokerStars. I gradually worked my way up through each limit playing a small number of tables and beating each of the games over 10-40k hand samples. Now I play regularly at 1/2, I'm gradually introducing 2/4 into my sessions, I've never used outside earnings for poker, and I still have my $5 promotional bonus. In other words, I manage my BR very carefully.

As a student of the game I continue to emphasize fundamental poker topics. Coaching with PokerStrategy.com gives me the ideal opprotunity to refine these fundamental concepts and expand my own poker education by working directly with ambitious poker players, like yourself.

My goal is to present complex ideas in a clear and simple way so that anyone interested in the game can learn and apply them. This is an exciting challenge for me, and I'm looking forward to it.

Nice coaching. :) New coach needs to work at leveling out his vowel sounds, but otherwise a pretty solid effort. :f_p:

I think I'll try evaluating one interesting hand from the weekly coaching and then catalogue them in this post.

Silver Coaching: Selected Hands

Recommended HUD stats for FL players Note: names from HoldemManager may differ in PokerTracker.

  • Total VPIP - The probability a player volintarily enters the pot when given the option to.
  • Total PFR - The probability a player raises preflop.
  • Postflop AGG% - Postflop Aggression Percentage (all streets combined), Probability player bets/raises postflop given the option.
  • WTSD% (when saw flop) - Probability of showing down given that they saw the flop.
  • Total Hands - The # of hands you have on this player
  • PlayerName - Useful when players join/leave or if your HUD popups have moved.

In General, disregard these statistics until you have at least 180 hands for Preflop/WTSD and 400 hands for AGG% Until your sample size is large enough, only use observations that are made @ the table and do not make large adjustments.

Thx dude, by the way here's a cleaner explanation for your question about how often you hit a flush by the river.

Probability of hitting a flush draw by the river: where P is the probability.

P(hit by river) = P(hit on turn) + [P(hit on river) * P(miss on turn)]

= (9/47) + [(9/46) * (1 - 9/47)]
= .191 + [.196 * .809]
= .191 + .159
= 35% (approx)

yeah, thanks!
Its pretty clear!

I have some mathematical and probabilities background, so i understand it. :)

i wonder if you understood my other question, i mean(i have seen this many times in ptr):

-suppose you have two winning players, one from micros, the other one a mid-stakes grinder. Both of them have the same winrate, lets suppose 3 BB/100.

-i have seen that the micros grinder wins more money that the rake he paid at a particular micro limit. Thats cool.

-but the mid-stakes grinder, barely wins the same money as the rake he paid. Thats cool too, if you win a lot of money, but the room wins the same or more.

I thought that, for higher limits, rake was cheaper, even for other kinds of poker, NL, PLO, etc.
My question is, its possible that the percentage of rake in FL midstakes is higher, or there is some other issue im not seeing? Maybe, the average size of pots in BBs, is smaller in higher limits or something? i dont get it.. ?(

Yep thats possible. Its important to be careful and make sure the info you're using is accurate but...

Given two players at different stakes with the same BB/100, we simply cannot answer the question "how much rake are they paying?" until we have more information than whats given.

So without that info it remains possible that the rake at a higher level can be more in BB/100 than at the lower one.

Definitely at PokerStars, but in recent years a clear effort has been made to have higher stakes games raked less in BB/100. In other words, you need to have less of an edge on your opponents to be profitable.

An obvious point here is that having the same winrate as someone at higher stakes =/= having the same level of skill.

yeah, sure, im not talking about skill level, for sure.

I think maybe, its what you said before, "the rake at a higher level can be more in BB/100 than at the lower one".

This topic got my attention, because i like to compare both curves, when i see the graph at ptr, the winnings curve and the red curve for rake. And i see it in the stats below, the winnings against the rake paid, in different limits.

Thank you!

As one last thing... its great to consider the rake. When you get right to it, the eqilibrium point for game theory optimal strategy (whatever that means) will always change when we change the structure.. the rake.. whatever.

BUT

We cannot control the rake. Focusing on things we can control and developing skills in those areas is going to earn us way more money.

so if the rake changes, maybe the optimal strategy changes as well?? .... wowww, thats pretty sick to explore... :P

that could even mean, that diffrent strategies would apply for different rooms with different rake structures... :P

It is interesting to talk about but its more of a distraction the way I see it because its not practical to give the rake undue focus.

I'd rather focus on things I can control and areas that produce the largest impact on my bottom line.

On Stars, rake seems to drop off at around 10/20. There used to be a sweet spot at 2/4 but after the talks in January this was pretty much ironed out I believe. A couple of years ago. there was a sweet spot at 1/2 which was also ironed out.

Once you get beyond 10/20, the rake in terms of big bets reduces dramatically. In actual dollar terms you aren't paying much more.

Drop off at 10/20 isnt as much as I though looking at the following but its there:

http://www.pokertableratings.com/poker-rake-analysis/fixed-limit-hold'em

Its worth pointing out that the games at 10/20 are way, way tougher than at 2/4. There are world class players sitting at 10/20 - along with some decent players and the odd fish. It is possible to loosen up a bit when you are playing a lower raked game.

good info!

are that numbers actual, or may that be old?

I wondered the same thing. I'm not sure how often PTR updates those calculations but thats exactly how I'd want the info presented.

I've contacted rooms in the past to ask them how many BB/100 are raked. They said they didn't know.

edit: given that FTP is still on there, my guess is these haven't been updated recently.

I asked a few poker friends and they say its outdated - sorry! I just assumed they would keep it up to date.

I'm inclined to think unless we have heard otherwise sites will be broadly the same as they were then. Stars will have changed, of course, because they have changed the method by which rake is calculated.
