How Harrier will do in the "Trollympics" this summer remains to be seen... but eleven years ago, he already placed first in one team event on his university's "Sport-Dies" (pronounced 'dee-ehs', it's Latin for "day"). Which one was it?
(I participated in all three)

1) Rowing
2) Beach volleyball
3) Team handball

Solution:

Spoiler

3) Team handball

Also sometimes known as "European handball", to distinguish it from an unrelated American game also called "handball", which I believe is more like squash. It was somewhat popular in the town where I went to school in my teens, but I never really properly played it before - which didn't stop me. :f_grin:

Let's deal with the other options first. I signed up for the beach volleyball event on the Sport-Dies 2011, also for basketball, and made the same mistake in both: I was supposed to sign up with a full team at my disposal, but I only signed up as myself. As a result, the expected "Team Harrier88" showed up with only me... :f_ugly:

We found a solution in both sports. In beach volleyball, I was paired up with an experienced young woman who was supposed to be part of the organizers' staff, and in basketball, there just happened to be a full team's worth of players who wanted to join, but didn't have an official registration - a perfect fit for someone like me who had an official registration, but no team. My performance in both events was relatively forgettable, though. Most students who signed up simply were a lot more experienced than me.

Speaking of which, I signed up for the rowing event at the 2012 Sport-Dies with no prior experience whatsoever. The tournament info said that anyone who can tell port from starboard can join (I think I googled it back then)... well, I was cheerfully greeted by my teammates, who all told me that they are new to this sport as well, so it's all good. What they meant, of course, was that they joined their club just a few months ago, not that they never rowed a day before in their life, like in my case. They were not too happy when they found during our first race, which was also the opening race of the event.

"What do you mean, you never rowed before?!" :f_eek: "Yeah, well, I come from a region where there is not a whole lot of water..." That's what I told them... and immediately needed help getting into the boat, because the way I attempted it was all wrong. I had my back to my team mates when the coxswain (the person who leads the boat) helped me get into my seat, but I could tell that they would have loved to keelhaul me. :f_biggrin: The races went like you would expect, but I was still having a lot of fun actually.

Team handball was held later that day, and honestly... I didn't even know the rules, but I used to be a soccer goalie, so I could just play goalie again, and it would pretty much be the same, right? I felt hopeful enough, but that feeling started to leave me when I saw all those players in their club jackets confidently hanging out at the gym's entrance...

This time, each player was signing up via a sheet asking about their name, position and skill level (Beginner, Advanced, or Club Player). The point was to get teams of relatively even skills, and considering that I was unfamiliar with the rules, "Beginner" seemed to suit me well. As a result, I got assigned to a team with mostly club level and advanced players, who got their rookie goalie to compensate.

Indeed, I found out the hard way that handball goalkeeping was not quite the same as the soccer equivalent and I was struggling quite a bit, but my teammates' skills carried us out of the group stage into the semi-finals. The mixed skill level system seemed to work, but didn't take one thing into account: I am a quick learner. Therefore, I quickly picked up what worked and what didn't and managed to do a lot better in the semi-finals already. My experienced teammates did the rest, and in the finals, we all played a good game to bring home the trophy. :f_drink: We were the Sport-Dies 2012 handball champions.

They really did have a trophy, which remained in the university's possession, but with a tag added with our team's name: "Team Watercolor". Our team's captain came up with the name on short notice when he was asked after our win, based on a bad German pun. ("What's up?" can also mean something like "What rubs off?" Watercolor rubs off, and rhymes with the question in certain dialects: "Was geht ab? - Wasserfarb'!")

Long live Team Watercolor, with their awkward name, their skilled attackers who could pick up the slack early on... and of course their trolling rookie goalie, who turned out to be a bit of a hustler in the later stages. :f_grin: We stayed to celebrate our victory for a while, but I didn't meet my teammates again after that. I wonder if the trophy with our tag is still in use, or if it got stashed away in a cupboard somewhere in the university. There was plenty of room for more tags, but it has been eleven years by now. Either way, the story of Team Watercolor will remain in our hearts. In mine, at least.

No winners this time, but like in the case of the Sport-Dies, it's all about participating. :f_grin:

I went to the pool today as part of my Saturday routine for some light exercise. The lifeguard who did my Bronze badge exam was on duty today, and saw me while he was doing his rounds as I was taking a break at the edge of the pool.

He asked me how the badges are coming along, so I told him about my progress and also mentioned the "Trollympics" where I am currently stuck on Silver pace in the swimming events. He then kindly gave me some pointers on how to improve my times. I practiced the starting jump several times and then did a lap of crawling so he could see where I am in need of improvement.

One problem seems to be that too much of my leg movement is coming from my knees. I'm supposed to work more with my thighs, with relatively straight legs. Also, I'm looking ahead too much. I would do better by lowering my head a bit, resulting in a better body posture overall.

So there is definitely room for improvement, but he also mentioned that Silver would be a perfectly fine result for my first attempt at the Sports Badge. I completely agree - but if I can make Gold, I will give it my best shot. I will try not to go too crazy about it, though, I already exercised a little more than I originally planned today.

And can you believe that we are already halfway through 2023? Time really flies, doesn't it?

Primrose and I did not do a lot of poker challenges or versus challenges in general yet. We plan to get back to it when Prim returns from her vacation, though I would need to re-install PartyPoker myself by now...

There is not much point in doing a "half-time" breakdown for the challenges, in any case. But what about you guys? What was your favorite burger version so far? What Troll Trivia fact surprised you the most? What is a challenge (live or online) that you would like Prim and me to do some time? And what is your prediction for the Trollympics, will we settle for Silver or can we grab the Gold after all?

Feel free to let us know, if you are still reading. :f_grin:

Trimmy and Misha seem to be getting along great. I guess this is the closest we may get to any kind of German-Russian friendship any time soon.

The Trollympics will continue to be the main feature until Primrose returns next weekend. Maybe I can present a new burger, I haven't planned next week's menu yet. But yes, we will be back to the Trollympic stadium tomorrow for some track and field events. We are trying to get the Gold somehow, so I need to improve in at least two areas.

Some of the events that we may see tomorrow are:

Long Jump (Coordination)
Bronze: 4.10 meters
Silver: 4.40 meters
Gold: 4.70 meters

Olympic Record: 8.90m by Bob Beamon (USA) at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, October 18th, 1968.
World Record: 8.95m by Mike Powell (USA) at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo, August 30th, 1991.

High Jump (Coordination)
Bronze: 1.25 meters
Silver: 1.35 meters
Gold: 1.45 meters

Olympic Record: 2.39m by Charles Austin (USA) at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, July 28th, 1996.
World Record: 2.45m by Javier Sotomayor (CUB) at the Gran Premio Diputación in Salamanca, July 27th, 1993.

100 Meter Dash (Speed)
Bronze: 17.6 seconds
Silver: 15.9 seconds
Gold: 14.2 seconds

Olympic Record: 9.63 seconds by Usain Bolt (JAM) at the 2012 London Olympics, August 5th, 2012.
World Record: 9.58 seconds by Usain Bolt (JAM) at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin, August 16th, 2009.

Another option may be the 3,000 meter run (stamina), where I might first do some practice attempts on my own. We may also see another shot at the sling ball throw (coordination), where I would be looking to improve on my Bronze level performance from last week.

They're all North Frisian Islands, so I chose based on the name, which is cool. It made me think of "Long Egg"

Harrier's distance: 4.10 meters

I don't think this is my kind of event, just barely reaching Bronze here. There may be some room for improvement, but I don't think I can make the better ranks in there this year. It was worth a try. :f_grin:

Sling Ball Throw (1 kg) (Coordination)
Bronze: 28.50m
Silver: 33.50m
Gold: 38.50m

Not an Olympic event.
World Record (2kg): 86.92m by Alwin Wagner (GER) on August 21st, 1982.

Harrier's distance: 36.10m

A considerable improvement over last week's personal best of 30.30m, but still just a few meters shy off Gold. Nevertheless, Silver is in the bag, so we have improved today, and Gold in the Trollympics overall is moving a little closer within reach. :f_drink:

No other attempts today, except for a short try at the standing long jump for fun (it's a strength event, were Gold is already locked up). I only would have made Silver there, but that's okay. I also ran a quick 400 meter lap in 1:30 minutes. I would need 15:00 minutes for Gold in the 3,000 meter run, requiring a pace of 2 minutes per lap on average. Obviously, the 1:30 minutes pace can't be sustained, but carrying on for 2 minutes per lap might be doable.

More Trollympics next Monday, we should even have an extra hour this time, so we might be able to do more events. Our current progress is:

Stamina: Silver (800m Freestyle) - 2 points
Strength: Gold (Medicine Ball Throw) - 3 points
Speed: Silver (25m Freestyle) - 2 points
Coordination: Silver (Sling Ball Throw) - 2 points

9 points in total, 11 points are required for Gold.

Simply speaking, I need two more Golds, in Stamina, Speed or Coordination - two of those three.

It's the 4th of July, which would be an excellent moment for a classic American barbecue with some good ol' fashioned burgers for the whole family...

...except we're a Troll-family. We're off to Russia, probably one of the most controversial stops on our World Tour, but not one that should be missing. The Trolls make an effort to keep this blog politics-free anyway... though we couldn't resist preparing this burger in time for July 4th. :f_grin:

Hey, did you know that the building with the famous onion domes on the left side of the picture is not the Kremlin, but Saint Basil's Cathedral? It's a common misconception. The Kremlin is the other building on the right, the one with the clock tower.

Anyway, for our burgers, we start preparing some kotleti/katleti style patties. Most recipes for katleti (Russian meatballs) that I found involve some kind of poultry meat, often together with pork, but for my burgers, I went for the classic beef and pork combo - it's the easiest to get.

I also included some panko breadcrumbs, an egg, chopped onions, chopped parsley, salt, pepper, garlic powser, and about a tablespoon of mayonnaise.

For the sauce, we're going for something a little fancier than plain mayonnaise... we will be adding a small jar of caviar. :f_grin:

I was using a part of this recipe for reference when it comes to the sauce.

To build our burger, we start with some lettuce and the katleti-style patty.

Then with add some onions and spread the caviar-sauce on the top bun...

...and our Russia-inspired burger is ready.

Very good! :f_thumbsup: The first one had a little too much sauce, but it's easy to correct that. Primrose loves her caviar, btw. And she fully approved of this burger.

I really should have added at least a teaspoon or so of vodka to the sauce, I believe. That's what I originally had in mind too, but I forgot as I was making it. I guess I'm not as much of a drunkard as I used to be - or maybe dinner prep was just too stressful.

Originally, I also had the idea of including a USSR-inspired burger in this series that would have preceded the Russian one. It would have featured plain whole wheat rolls, fake meat patties, cabbage, and no sauce at all. Also, the pictures would have been grayscale, probably with some other "old photograph" style touches. I also once considered an "Ancient Israel"-inspired burger, possibly around Easter time, using pita bread and several ingredients that were mentioned in the Bible as fillings. In the end, though, I decided to stick to the present day.

Ranking those burgers doesn't get any easier... 10th place?

1st Switzerland
2nd Cyprus
3rd Israel
4th Greece
5th Mongolia
6th Denmark
7th Korea
8th Spain
9th Germany
10th Russia
11th Alsace
12th Italy
13th Texas
14th California
15th Mexico
16th Morocco
17th Brazil
18th Arabia
19th Turkey
20th England
21st France
22nd Colombia
23rd Cuba
24th Canada
25th Hungary
26th The Netherlands

New number one for Prim - lovely! :f_love: :f_drink:

I had plenty of leftover sauce, so I had some of it with some fish sticks later that day.

Fish sticks and caviar may be a strange seafood combo... but it worked. :f_grin: Also, those were salmon fish sticks.

I've had had caviar several times in my life.
I don't taste it.
Other than being slightly salty, and slightly fishy, it has no taste. Mrs Vorpal concurs.

This may have been the first time I have eaten it pure, at least.

Fishy, salty, but I personally liked it. It's hard to go wrong with seafood, as far as I'm concerned.

I heard the taste also depends a lot on the kind of caviar you're having. "Authentic" caviar is bigger than the roughly pinhead-sized one I had that time, and it would also have a more distinct taste, I believe. For the purpose of using it as an ingredient in a sauce, however, the kind I had worked perfectly fine.

I first had caviar at the Russian pavilion at Expo '67 in Montreal
The second time the caviar came from farmed Fraser River sturgeon. This was the best of the 3. The individual eggs and if you bit one individually, there was a reward of a burst of flavour (still salty/fishy but still a burst of something noticeable)
The 3rd time was just recently at a fancy-ass French restaurant in Vancouver. The food there was beyond magnifique, but the caviar was meh

I always noticed that when I have sushi with fish roe. If you eat the roll normally, you hardly notice it, but if you bite into a single one of those tiny fish eggs, you get a surprising amount of flavor out of it.

Primrose the adorable Troll-puppy is currently on her way home. We wish her a safe and pleasant journey. :f_love: In the meantime, let's check out yesterday's cooking.

When I was looking up the recipe for those Swedish meatballs last week, I saw another recipe linked for keftedes, which would be Greek meatballs. I hadn't heard of them before, but I like Greek food, and I like meatballs - so how could we go wrong?

They would need a good side dish, though. The keftedes recipe also linked to spinakorizo, which would be Greek spinach rice. How about that, it's like a daisy-chain of recipe links. :f_grin: Today, we will therefore get two recipes for the price of one.

Today's Dishes: Keftedes and Spinakorizo
Cuisine: Greek
Recipes: https://www.carolinescooking.com/keftedes-greek-meatballs/
https://www.carolinescooking.com/spanakorizo-greek-spinach-rice/

Again, we start by soaking about 55g of breadcrumbs, this time in 120ml of milk.

We will drain them a little and combine them with 450g ground beef and pork, chopped onions, a tablespoon each of chopped mint and parsley, a teaspoon of dried oregano, a tablespoon of olive oil, half a tablespoon of red wine vinegar, and some salt and pepper.

That's the meat for our meatballs, we're going to put it in the fridge for a bit while we are preparing the spinach rice. We start by frying some onions and scallions for a bit.

Then add about 200g of spinach...

...and finally add about 50g of rice (I chose basmati) and 120ml of water.

We can now cover the pan and reduce the heat while we get back to those meatballs. We are going to roll them in a bit of flour this time.

They are now ready for the pan... but once again, they didn't hold together very well. Maybe overcrowding the pan like that is not a good idea. Or maybe I'm just better off flipping burger patties instead.

Oh deary me, and the rice got overcooked! :f_eek: :f_o:

What a mess... can the dish still be saved?

Well, I didn't bother with the suggested lemon juice anymore, but I did add some dill and feta on the spinach rice, at least. It helped cover the overcooked spots. The meatballs still look messy.

Oh well, the taste was still good. Fine recipes, but not so great cooking by me.

1) Langeoog

Pictured above is the water tower, the main landmark of the island. I have spent several vacations on Langeoog during the 90's, the last one was in 1999 for my father's 50's birthday.

I believe the name means something like "long island" in the local dialect - not to be confused with the island in New York State, which I assume gave the name to the famous longdrink.

Like many other North Sea islands, it is a great destination for a short, relaxing vacation. Pleasantly mild climate, nice rural atmosphere (the entire island has a population below 2K people) and hardly any noise thanks to the island's no automobile policy. People get around using bicycles, trains and even horse carriages instead.

Honestly, if I could choose a place to spend the rest of my life in and work/economics weren't an issue, I think this place would be worth a consideration, at least.

Some of my favorite memories involve a seaside restaurant which is also a bakery and pastry shop called "Seekrug". I was once having dinner there while it was very windy and rainy outside. The wild sea was a spectacular sight in this weather, and while the rain was pattering against the glass ceiling and windows, you were sitting inside, nice and comfy, enjoying a good schnitzel (without sauce back then - I hadn't learned yet to appreciate the splendor that is a Jägerschnitzel. Not sure if they were even selling that).

Conversely, I also remember a visit in that restaurant once when the weather was nice and sunny instead, which was beautiful in a different way. That time, you could watch people having a good time on the beach, flying kites and going for relaxing walks in the sand.

Congrats to Vorpal! :f_drink: I will leave you guys with this video, which will give you an idea of what the island looks like from above.

All right, fellas. Another weekend goes by, and Primrose has been diligently grinding the PartyPoker freerolls. I would love to join in for some poker challenges there, but as you know, I am currently dealing with some issues regarding what seems to be a false positive by Malwarebytes about some important PartyPoker files, which needs to be sorted out first. Vorpal knows about the issue, at least, and I'm not sure if anyone else is even reading. :f_biggrin: (Definitely say hi if you're a lurker - we don't bite, we just troll.)

I expect my version of PartyPoker should be functional some time next week. Until then, the Quest for Gold continues at the Trollympics tomorrow, where we will likely see some speed or stamina based running events (most likely only one of the two) and possibly another shot at the sling ball. The situation remains unchanged - we need Gold in two more events in order to qualify for Gold in the entire Trollympics.

I did actually give the 25m freestyle swimming another try yesterday, but couldn't even improve on my old time of what I think was 20.30 seconds. (21.45 seconds from my first attempt is the official time in the books, as both would only qualify for Silver, so there was no need to update it). Once again, I only made 21.xx seconds yesterday, which is terrible, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe swimming is not my sport after all. Primrose will obliterate my time for sure.

I definitely intend to at least collect the DLRG Gold badge before I quit in shame, and maybe I will even make an attempt with Prim as my partner for the transport swimming section, because we plan to meet up again next week. :f_grin: Whether or not we take shots at any badge or introduce any new Live Challenges will remain to be seen - I'm mostly helping the poor grindette to get through the dreaded month of July, so maybe we will just take it easy. I would at least like to see another attempt at her Mario Land drinking game. :f_biggrin: :f_ugly:
