The Cutting Room Floor
The Burgers Around the World series shall be concluded this week, I had the final burger today. I hope you guys enjoyed following along.
I still would have had a few ideas, but with the year coming to a close and the Trolls looking forward to their winter break, I figured that now is an excellent point for the finale.
Before I post the last burger, probably tomorrow - and I can already say that Primrose considered this one the worst of all
- I would like to take a moment to list all the burgers that didn't quite make the cut. Burgers for which I had an idea, but which I didn't end up making in the end, for various reasons.
In no particular order:
Norway
This would have been a salmon burger, I even had a specific recipe. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of anything else to add, and I didn't just want to copy a recipe without getting creative myself. Also, salmon is relatively expensive, and I never made burgers out of it before, so it seemed a little intimidating.
Sweden
Köttbullar style, with an appropriate sauce. I don't think it would have been authentic without cranberries, though, and I don't like them.
Ireland
Based on Irish stew, with (possibly mashed) potatoes, carrots, onions, parsley... and maybe I would have found a way to add Guinness to it too.
Belgium
With fries, and... I couldn't think of anything else, which mainly stopped me from making it.
Austria
Possibly inspired by Jägerschnitzel... but I couldn't find a good way to turn it into a burger version.
Philadelphia
Based on Philly Cheese Steak, but I thought it would have been too similar to a regular cheeseburger.
Chicago
Like Chicago-style hot dogs, but with a beef patty instead of a sausage. I don't think it would have made sense without the obligatory poppy seed bun, however, and since proper burger buns with poppy seeds are not sold, I would have had to make them myself, and I never found the time to experiment with burger buns.
American Southern States
Based on Po' Boy sandwiches, with fried shrimps. It would have been one of the more labor-intensive ones, but my main problem was that I had difficulties getting my hands on some cajun seasoning.
Hawaii
Would have been an obvious combo with pineapples and all... but I don't like them.
Egypt
With falafel-style vegetarian patties. In my experience, though, they fall apart quite easily, and I wanted to stick to beef/pork/chicken only.
Atlantis
Would have been a generic seafood burger, possibly inspired by the Filet-o-Fish at McDonald's, but with added calamari and shrimps, I think. Still, I decided to skip the seafood burgers entirely in the end. An alternative version based on "The Ocean" was also considered, which would have used pretzel buns (for the salt), which is an idea that I re-used in today's version.
Portugal
This one also would have involved seafood, but I never managed to get any concrete ideas.
Bologna
With bolognese ragù and parmesan on top of a standard meat patty, but it would have needed more ingredients, and I couldn't think of a version that works.
A few versions based on historical nations were also considered, like USSR (meat-substitute, cabbage, regular whole wheat roll) or Ancient Israel (pita bread, honey-mustard sauce, olives, fish). In the end, I decided to stick to current places only.
That's all I can think of right now, there may have been others. Let's wrap up the series tomorrow, if I can get to it.
